How Data Science Delivers Better Brackets

The TIBCO team leverages multiple publicly available data sets, including historical data from past tournaments and individual team performances. They use TIBCO® Data Science and TIBCO Spotfire® to identify data patterns and perform data exploration of the historical data. Next, they create an algorithm to make their NCAA tournament predictions. This algorithm is tested against the historical data to see if it accurately predicts winners and losers.  

Last year’s NCAA tournament culminated with a surprise victor, the Baylor Bears. Yet, TIBCO’s data science team still ended in the 75th percentile with its forecasted bracket. TIBCO also predicted two of the four final four teams, and for three years in a row. TIBCO has correctly predicted at least one of the teams in the national championship game.
