The streaming platform has reported a loss of 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter.

The Lede

Netflix has reported a decline in subscribers for the first time in over a decade after losing 200,000 paid users in the first quarter of the year, and is exploring the possibility of introducing lower-priced, ad-supported subscription tiers to the platform.

Key Details

  • Shares of Netflix dropped more than 25 percent after the company announced the news on Tuesday.
  • Netflix expects a loss of two million global paid subscribers in the second quarter. The last time the streaming platform lost subscribers was October 2011.
  • The company has cited increased competition, password sharing, inflation and Russia's invasion of Ukraine as factors contributing to the decline.

  1. imho, there's plenty of content, so that's not it - but given how fast the service was growing, there was no need for so much price gouging. I think it'd simply getting to be too expensive. with so many new subscribers over the past x number of years, the revenue would have increased naturally just based on that alone - bumping up the price every year really is spitting in the face of existing customers.

  2. Another IMPORTANT point is that almost 1 million lost subscribers were in Russia. A country that Netflix rightly pulled out of fairly recently.

  3. Less and less compelling content
Cancelling shows after 1 or 2 seasons (even some that are popular)
Increasing prices more and more often

In addition, there are dozens of competing streaming services now so people have more options for their content and watching.

At a time when competition is increasing and more and more of those are carrying more compelling content, you turn around and raise prices (again) while not offering you own increase in compelling content.
    The end result: lost subscribers.

Netflix blaming it all on their customers and now threatening to grief them even more is a perfect example of what a service in decline looks like.

    1. i'd say it's mostly just the price increase year after year.

Yeah they def need to play catch up, considering there are services that offer live sports and a bank of content... Netflix what you got next?

  4. Well Netflix recently began testing a feature that would prompt subscribers to pay extra if they were sharing the service with people outside their own household. I think this is what annoying the customers.
