Tabs are coming to Windows 11, Microsoft says

Microsoft has finally confirmed that File Explorer in Windows 11 is getting tabs, though on the other hand, the company hasn’t provided any information as to when this is projected to happen.

We’ve known for a while that this feature was being worked on, and the most recent Windows Insider builds included evidence the support for tabs was getting closer to release.

Microsoft, however, hasn’t discussed about the return of tab support in File Explorer until today at the company’s hybrid work event when it previewed this feature as one of the most important updates Windows 11 is about to get.

New Windows 11 preview build coming this week

Unfortunately, the company hasn’t provided any information as to when the update is supposed to roll out, but if anything, everybody expects the support for tabs to become available in the second half of the year when a major feature update is supposed to roll out for Windows 11.

“We want to help Windows users be more efficient and more productive in every experience. The redesigned, cloud-powered File Explorer makes it easier to find what you’re looking for, allowing you to see all files in one centralized place. You can also pin files and create tabs in File Explorer, bringing what used to take six clicks to get to an important file to one,” Microsoft explained.

Needless to say, before the support for tabs makes its way to production devices, Microsoft is expected to first ship it to devices enrolled in the Windows Insider program.

And given the company has already announced its debut, it’s probably just a matter of time until a new build with tabs in File Explorer makes its way to testers. If anything, a new build is expected this week, so fingers crossed to finally include this highly anticipated features for the very first insiders.
