UI/UX Case Study: Helping travellers to reach the airport on time while making user to constantly engage with the app

Problem statement:

Provide us with a design solution

You have been hired as a UX Designer by a start-up travel company TravelEasy. Customers of the company travel a lot but they never know exactly when they need to leave for the airport. TravelEasy is developing an app to help travellers get there on time.

As part of the task, you are required to

You are not expected to entirely solve this problem in the limited time that is given to you. Think about various features and functionalities that would be useful as part of this app and would make the customer continuously engage with this app. Describe the problems identified, the workflows involved, and the screens within the app that would make the experience intuitive and meaningful for the customer.

Process:

After reading the problem statement, I tried to break down the statement according to my framework 5W1H.

What: An app that assists the user to when to leave for the airport

Why: to have a planned, tension-free, and engaging journey that helps the user as well as the business.

When: While traveling via flight.

Where: From user’s location/ airport.

How: To measure the success, we can check a few factors:

  • drop-off rates
  • no. of people able to reach the airport in time.
  • the engagement rate of users.
  • no. of people coming back to the app to book tours and travels.
  • ratings, etc

Who: Based on my understanding the users have the following categories:

  • Based on Purpose
  • Based on Count
  • Based on Travel
  • Based on Regularity

But since we have a shortage of time to do the research on each user persona and go through their pain points. I decided to find an intersection point by using one persona and performed the journey mapping exercise.

Functionality 1:

Update the user about weather and traffic details, also provide an option to book a cab.

Way 1: Notify users via app notifications(email, message, and in-app) and ask them to set a calendar event.

Way 2: Update the details on my trips screen.

How does this help the Business?

Booking a cab via our platform will bring in more business. Since we are informing the user repetitively with multiple platforms, chances of users not remembering to leave on time decrease, since their success rate will be higher, they will recommend the app to their friends and family(word of mouth).

Functionality 2:

Connect people in the same vicinity having the almost same time of flights so that they can share the cab or conveyance if possible.

We can give an option to find people leaving for the airport in the journey while booking the cab

So that even in a worst-case scenario, if the user doesn’t get any cab he/she can reach out to someone by sending a request(to avoid spamming), and if they accept they can pair up with them to reach the airport.

How does this help the Business?

  • more engagement from users even when they are not at the airport.

Functionality 3:

Update user about the estimated average time baggage counter takes.

We can put up this detail along with other baggage details like weight.

How does this help the Business?

When our app will help users to save time and avoid long queues, they will use the app more often to book the tickets — Reciprocity Effect

Functionality 4:

Help the user to find places at the airport like terminals, baggage counters, and explore shops.

Since AR is a booming industry especially in the travel sector. I thought to explore the possibilities in our app.

Feature 1: Scan boarding pass to get to the terminal with the help of the TravelEasy AR tool.

Feature 2: Directly search shops and baggage counter via explore page, GUIDE tool will help them to find the path from their current location on the airport

How does this help the Business?

  • Increase user engagement.
  • A big problem that people face is not being able to get to find the terminal, especially when they are getting late. This would help address that issue.
  • If users want to buy something from some shop before boarding this feature will help them find a particular shop with ease.
  • People love food, exploring the airport during layovers, or when they have plenty of time in boarding the flight, and hence this will help them to pass time effortlessly and businesses can collaborate with various shops for offers.

Functionality 5:

Allow the user to get the details about their lounge access based on the credit/debit card.

Scan credit cards to get to the details about the lounge access.

How does this help the Business?

  • Increase user engagement.
  • People love free food, premium resting areas during layovers(no one wants to wait on metal chairs), or during transfer, and hence this will help them to pass time effortlessly and Travel Easy can collaborate with the lounges and banks for offers.

Feature 6:

Who doesn’t love pictures? Who doesn’t love filters? Who doesn’t love sharing them with friends?

  • Picture sharing apps like Snapchat, Instagram have the same set of filters that you use everywhere. Travel Easy gives you new and unique filters based on airport location. You might not get filters that were available at Delhi airport at any other place. So click amazing pictures and share them with friends.

How does this help the Business?

  • Free Marketing, people click pictures and share them with friends and family. These filters would attract others to try TravelEasy as well.
  • Pictures and filters are likely to lure people into booking more flights and traveling via TravelEasy, hence will increase sales.

So Yeah… That’s a wrap!

So that’s pretty much it. This was my entire process of designing the TravelEasy App. Do reach out to me if you would like to share anything with me. I’d gladly accept it.
