While I don't like Vivaldi as a browser, I don't disagree with their assessment here.

Too much of the situation reminds me of what lead to the browser ballet being a thing in previous versions of windows.

I can't say I see anything here that amounts to an assessment. For example, "to avoid being prosecuted for anticompetitive behavior" is purely assuming bad faith. Apple and Google have already taken draconian steps to curb third-party browsers on their platforms. Setting the default browser in Windows 11 wasn't impossible; only it had downgraded from Windows 10-era easy to Windows Vista-era difficult. And since the dominant browser is Google's not Microsoft's, the chance of a successful prosecution is nil.

"It should be installed for all users," they say. This probably happens on the next Patch Tuesday. It will happen for all users.

No wonder the source of this article is The Register. This tabloid-grade source thrives on sensationalism.

so does Mac asks you which browser you would like to use?

There is an absurdity with Firefox and Vivaldi - and the problem is similar to the BS of the 90s anti-trust...

If it goes the same way, the results will screw over users. Another ballot screen or K editions or N editions - all stuff that screwed customers and developers that could no longer count on OS features being available.

The 90s anti-trust had deeper breaks to the industry, with things like client to server browser features, HTML5 features, document standards in HTML - all killed by the DOJ and EU - which took the industry 5-15 years to implement what was working with IE standards, that Sun and others prevented from being adopted.

The crap back then wasn't about Microsoft, it was about destroying and breaking technology and leaving it dead for years. Browser Client/Server communication to use Outlook on Exchange via HTTP was a basic features in 1995. Something that would be exclusive to IE and IIS for nearly 10 years before the same functionality made it into web servers and other browsers. And even then, it was a recreation, to purposely not use the same terms/tags as Microsoft.

This didn't screw Microsoft, it screwed the entire industry - wiht no way to go forward with a non-IE or non-IIS server - while not being allowed to use Microsoft products due to DOJ and EU restrictions that curtailed most enterprise customers.

Also we should ask - why won't these companies just set the file types and protocols for the users, why do they need the OS to do it for them.

Microsoft made it granular - so that users could pick calendar web protocol or desktop app for each type - and this is what made Firefox and Google and other browsers mad. So, Microsoft makes it easy for users with a single click - and they are still upset.

Instead, it is them, not Microsoft that should set the defaults from their software, just as all software has done since Windows 3.0.

The risk here, if they can push regulative actions, they will get more than just a ballot screen - there is a big chance they will go for gold and force breaks, and require microsoft to open up other aspects to 3rd party non-sense.

Breaking things for users and developers once again. The potential to set back technology for us is scary as it was a massive regression and cost developers and users and companies a lot of money the last time this happened.

Who was talking about Macs or said Apple was innocent?

owners of failed browsers are never happy and always loud. they should make their browser better with only useful features people will actually use. that should be their focus

We're not talking about which one is the better browser, but about the Microsoft policy of obstructing default browser change.

#facepalm You must know one needs more than a "better" product to over come a big tech company with a monopoly like position. You must work for Microsoft because that is the only reason why anyone would take their side on this (or plain stupidity is another possibility). Everyone wants a "easy" way to change a default app.

That's pretty ignorant. MS has a track record of anti competitive behavior and in this case they're helping Google take over control of the web.

Also, Vivaldi feature wise has way more stuff than edge lol.

That's like saying whoever makes the best tasting beer in the US will eventually be the #1 beer in the US.

Newsflash - the worst tasting beer in the history of the universe is the #1 beer in America. Why are products popular? Because they're the best? No, not even close. What I think is funny is that despite having an almost monopoly on OSes, Microsoft's Edge browser is very far behind second compared to Chrome.

Vivaldi isn't a failed browser nor is Firefox.

Yes we are. Somehow Chrome isn't complaining about browser settings, weird coincidence, isn't it?

Clearly, most people don't think so.

There's nothing wrong with what they did now. It's a button press and I like the fact that you as the user has to go do it via the settings app.

We don't need to give apps the ability to set themselves up as default. That old way is a security issue imo.

Just tell your users how to do it if they want to, that's all it takes.

Wow, another article from The Register attacking Microsoft - how bizarre! Bunch of loser hacks living in 2001.

Probably the same newspaper running all those articles about German towns switching to Linux.

Ah the vocal minority

No the EU will not step in since Edge hasn't even a large marketshare.
