Touch-enabled devices are getting Snap layouts

Snap layouts have been added with much fanfare in Windows 11 to make multitasking a much more convenient process, and in many ways, it really accomplished its goal.

I, for one, am using Snap layouts on a regular basis, pretty much because my work implies having at least two or three windows running on the same screen at the same time.

And given I use a Surface PC for my daily work, it goes without saying that sometimes it’d feel a lot more natural to just snap windows using touch input.

But at this point, support for touch Snap layouts has been missing, with Microsoft using its hybrid work event today to announce this new feature.

As you’d expect, touch Snap layouts work pretty much the same as they do with a mouse, but on the other hand, everything feels a lot more natural because you just have to drag a window around.

The feature will likely launch for insider PCs in the upcoming builds

Wangui McKelvey, General Manager, Microsoft 365, who announced this feature earlier today, hasn’t provided any information as to when the new touch Snap layouts could launch for users out there.

“What did we do before Snap layouts? I love this feature in Windows 11. It may be the feature I use the most as I’m always using multiple windows throughout the day. It’s so easy to snap together two or more related windows when I’m doing research or to multitask on up to four separate projects simultaneously. We’re always looking for ways to help people work smarter, not harder,” McKelvey explained.

“So, now, I’m excited we are adding touch Snap layouts for touch-enabled devices. This capability is going to improve work for so many, including frontline workers using touch devices in their day-to-day work.”
