Spotify's COVID-19 content advisory continues roll out two months after Joe Rogan uproar
You probably remember a few months ago when you couldn't turn on the news, check Twitter or talk to your conservative uncle without broaching the issue of Joe Rogan, who is signed to an exclusive deal with Spotify worth more than $200 million. In January, 270 physicians and scientists published an open letter to Spotify demanding that it institute misinformation policies in light of Rogan's podcast, which tops Spotify's charts and has repeatedly served as a platform for false narratives about the virus. Then, musical icons like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell pulled their libraries from the platform in protest, prompting Spotify to belatedly publish its platform rules. Now, Spotify finally rolled out a content advisory warning on podcasts that discuss COVID-19, two months after it committed to launching the feature.
The advisory is a blue bar that appears atop episodes of podcasts that discuss COVID-19, prompting listeners to click to learn more. This directs users to its COVID-19 information hub, which it added in March 2020. TechCrunch asked Spotify how its app determines which podcast episodes address COVID-19 -- it appears that the advisory shows up if words like "COVID-19," "coronavirus" or "pandemic" appear in the metadata of an episode, including its title. Spotify said that it started rolling out the feature in February, but for some users, the feature has taken longer to appear in app. By now, Spotify has labeled over 1.4 million podcasts with this warning.
Social platforms like Twitter acted faster in their attempts to combat the spread of COVID-19 misinformation. Just days after lockdowns in the U.S. began, Twitter banned any tweets that could help the virus spread. Two months later, it released a coronavirus advisory warning on tweets that may contain false information. Competing streaming services like Apple Podcasts don't have these advisory warnings, though Apple Podcasts also doesn't fund a podcaster who talks to right-wing conspiracy theorists for fun.
Despite its PR nightmare, as calls to boycott Spotify trended across social media, the backlash did little to boost Spotify's rivals. Spotify remains dominant, though other platforms have begun to slowly chip away at its lead.
Update, 3/28/22, 9:20 PM ET with clarification from Spotify about the timeline of the feature rollout.

Oscars recap: 'CODA' is the big winner, but Will Smith and Chris Rock steal the show
The Oscars were a big hit on Sunday, with the biggest hit coming from Will Smith’s hand to presenter Chris Rock’s face. Rock made a G.I. Jane joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s short hair. Pickett Smith has been vocal about suffering from alopecia. At first Smith laughed at the joke, but when he saw his wife’s reaction he stormed on stage and assaulted the comedian. “That was the greatest night in the history of television,” Rock joked, despite being stunned by the incident. Smith later won the Oscar for his role in King Richard, in which he plays Venus and Serena Williams' father, and he couldn't help but make the connection between himself and Richard Williams. “Art imitates life,” Smith said. “I look like the crazy father, just like they said, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.” There was also an actual award show happening around all that drama, and the show was hosted by Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall, who warned the state of Florida that they may not like the show because of the recent “Don’t Say Gay” Bill. “For you people in Florida, we're going to have a gay night,” Sykes said. Then all of them sang the word “gay” several times. The Oscars also celebrated some great films and performances. CODA took home the award for Best Picture, director Sian Heder won for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Troy Kutsor made history when he became the first deaf person to win Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film. “I just wanted to say that this is dedicated to the deaf community, the C.O.D.A. Community and the disabled community” Kutsor signed. “This is our moment. “ The show also reunited some previous winners, Pulp Fiction’s Uma Thurman and John Travola danced around Samuel L. Jackson, Godfather legends Al Pacino, Francis Ford Coppola and Robert De Niro made the audience an offer they couldn’t refuse, and following his recent gender transition, Elliot Page made an appearance alongside Juno co-stars Jennifer Garner and J.K. Simmons. “Juno had me hooked from the very first page and was completely infused with Diablo Cody's distinctive voice,” Page said. “It was unlike anything I'd ever read before.” And while there was hardly any mention of the war in Ukraine, Mila Kunis has been an advocate for peace in the country where she was born. So she used her moment as a presenter to praise Ukranians for their resilience. “Recent global events have left many of us feeling gutted,” Kunis said. “Yet when you witness the strength and dignity of those facing such devastation, it's impossible not to be moved by their resilience. One cannot help but be in awe of those who find the strength to keep fighting through unimaginable darkness.”

Will Smith stuns Oscar viewers by going on stage to slap Chris Rock over joke about Jada Pinkett Smith
Will Smith shocked the audience and television viewers alike during the Academy Awards Sunday when he went on stage and slapped Chris Rock, who made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, while he was presenting. While presenting for best documentary, Rock compared Pinkett Smith, who has struggled with alopecia for years, to Demi Moore’s character from 1997’s G.I. Jane, who has a shaved head. Though Smith appeared to laugh at first, as Pinkett Smith clearly did not find the joke funny, a moment later he was on stage. Though the American audience only saw an edited version of the incident, other countries, like Japan, aired the whole thing uncensored. Immediately after Smith slapped him and walked off stage, a stunned Rock said, “Wow. Will Smith just slapped the s**t out of me.” Once back in his seat, Smith yelled twice, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth!” Rock kept his composure and went on to present the award. During the next commercial break, there is video of Will being taken aside and talked to by Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry. Less than an hour later, Smith won Best Actor for his performance in King Richard. At the end of his speech, he acknowledged that his actions might have consequences, saying, “I’m hoping the Academy invites me back.”
