Google Photos spring update introduces tidier library and sharing tabs

Google has announced a new update for Google Photos with a focus on spring cleaning. The update includes a more sortable library tab, a tidier sharing tab, and a quick link at the top of the photo grid to take you to your screenshots if you choose to keep them in a separate folder rather than back them up. Hopefully, if you find Google Photos a bit clumsy to navigate, this update will help.

With the new sortable library tab, you will be able to view your favourites, albums, and more as a grid or list. You can filter the list by type too so that you can quickly find what you’re looking for. Additionally, Google has added an import photos section below the album grid to help you move photos from other services and even digitise them if you only have a hard copy. This will help you collect them all in one place for simpler browsing.

With the updated sharing tab, Google has created sections for partner sharing, shared albums, and conversations. If your connected friends add content, you’ll be notified so you don’t miss anything and with more defined sections, items should be easier to locate. This new sharing tab is coming to Android this week but iOS users will have to wait a bit longer.

Finally, if you take lots of screenshots on your phone and have decided to not back them up, they don’t normally appear in the main Google Photos feed of pictures. To make it easier to get to your screenshots, Google Photos will show a screenshots button at the top of your photo feed so you can jump to them instead of digging around in other tabs. On Android, Google Lens, which is built into Google Photos, will be able to show contextual suggestions to copy text, crop, or search when viewing a screenshot.
