3月25日消息，据彭博社报道，知情人士透露，石油巨头埃克森美孚正开展试点项目，使用原本在美国北达科他州的油田中燃烧掉的伴生天然气（火炬气）为加密货币开采提供电力。该项目于2021年1月启动，目前该公司考虑将试点推广至美国阿拉斯加、尼日利亚、阿根廷、圭亚那以及德国。
由于缺乏足够的管道基础设施，许多油田的伴生天然气会被燃烧掉，造成能源浪费。知情人士透漏，埃克森美孚已与伴生气发电公司Crusoe Energy Systems Inc.达成协议，从巴肯页岩盆地的一个油井平台获取天然气，为用于现场运行比特币挖矿服务器的移动发电机供电。
