A new version of VLC Media Player for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV includes some much-requested features, including support for accessing files from connected drives as well as spatial audio with AirPods Pro and Max

This is a popular — and free — choice for playing video and audio, and updates are fairly rare. That said, VLC Media Player 3.3 appears to be worth the wait.

VLC Media Player 3.3 offers lengthy list of new features

The list of new features in VLC media player 3.3 is lengthy. “This update adds a completely re-written video playback interface, adds support for browsing NFS and SFTP network shares, includes major speed improvements avoiding heating issues and greatly improves the local media library appearance especially for audio,” says Felix Paul Kühne from VideoLAN, the developer of VLC’s ports to macOS, tvOS and iOS.

And that’s just getting started. As noted, the new version adds support for Files.app as a source to open media without
importing the file to VLC. And that also includes playing files off external devices plugged into iPad or iPhone.

And the new version offers spatial audio with AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

There are many more additions, like automatic video deinterlacing (by default), support for browsing NFS and SFTP shares, the new version enables downloads from SMB servers, and many more enhancements.

Get it now

VLC Media Player 3.3 is available now on the App Store. It’s free to download and use.

And it works on many older devices. It supports iOS 9.0 or later, and runs on iPhone 4S, iPad 2nd generation, 1st-generation iPad mini and Apple TV HD or any later device.

But the previous update was a year ago. That’s a typical update schedule for freeware.
