Why no advertising?
2011-07-13
I got a call from an advertising salesman, saying he’d like to run banner ads at the top and bottom of cdbaby.com.
I said, “No way. Out of the question. That would be like putting a coke machine in a monastery. I’m not doing this to make money.”
He asked, “But you’re a business. What do you mean you’re not trying to make money?”
I said, “I’m just trying to help musicians. CD Baby has to charge money to sustain itself, but the money’s not the point. I don’t do anything for the money.”
This goes back to the utopian perfect-world ideal of why we’re doing what we’re doing in the first place.
In a perfect world, would your website be covered with advertising?
When you ask your customers what would improve your service, has anyone said, “Please fill your website with more advertising”?
Nope. So don’t do it.

That's the best analogy I've ever heard! - Sean Crawford (2017-06-16) #
I laughed at the monastery one too.
Business management guru Peter Drucker defined profit as a cost, as the cost of doing business. You needed profit for things like expansion to a third computer.
By the way, I believe it was Drucker's writings that got business to be recognized as deserving a faculty. Before him you had economics and sociology, but not business. Businessmen learned on the job. - Jyri (2018-12-09) #
I run Blogger site with ads for a year. 999 unique people visiting it, some are bots, I know - BUT. Ads pay peanuts. Everyone is using AdBlockers or similar. People are just tired of ads or blind to them. I make roughly €6 a Month.
Is that worth it, losing potential readers, on your blog for an ad?
I said no. Ads you can not control, stealing space, and stealing also our time when sites loads slower. I am thinking to remove them all. Yes, many think that if you only start bloggin in pajama - you'll sleep with lots of money.
They all are wrong. Advertising worked at 2007-2010, but it's not working now b/c people are using AdBlockers. I write in Finnish because I love it.
Everyone should write to improve, not to get rich.
Thank you.
