Why am I here?

2013-12-20

Looking around the room.

“Why am I here?”

It’s a useful question to ask often.

Either it will re-focus your reasons for being where you are, or it will make you realize your reasons have expired and you should be somewhere else.

In a little apartment in Singapore, I ask it again.

“Why am I here?”

Because of the brilliant and fascinating people here.

(But I’m refusing all requests to meet, to stay focused on my work. For the past 3 years I was very social, but now I’m not.)

Because I love learning about Asia, and Singapore is a great central home base for that.

(But I’m not exploring Asia right now. For the past 3 years I was, but now I’m inwardly-focused on my writing and programming.)

Because I love and admire it, and it feels like home.

(But I’ve loved everywhere I’ve lived, from California to New York to London to Portland. They’ve all felt like home. Future places will feel like home, too.)

Because I’m here right now.

(But there are airplanes. You can sit in them.)

Most of us are where we are because of decisions we made years ago. But are those reasons still current for what we need now? Ask again.

“Why am I here?”

Damn. I ran out of reasons. I should be somewhere else.

I want silence, solitude, and wide open spaces.

I want to work all day while listening to nothing but birds and wind in the trees.

I want an intentional lack of distractions, far far away, to cure my tendency to say yes to intellectually stimulating events.

So the answer was clear.

I moved to New Zealand’s South Island.

Here I am.

“Why am I here?”

To work. To focus. To write. To code. To launch.

Yes. Good answer.

Wishing you great peace, solitude and space in your new location, Derek. 'Why am I here?' - a great question for us all to ask ourselves. Thank you for sharing.

You are moved to be where you can be the most productive in the realms of the body, the intellect, the emotions and the spirit. Balance and motion are working together in harmony and more will be revealed. Blessed be.

Amen to all of that. I've many times asked that same question and made a change. But this earth is not my home; I'm just passing through. So, while I'm here, no one place will necessarily be a forever home. Looking forward to exploring more places, more opportunities, and making the necessary changes when needed.

As always, thanks for the inspiration, Derek!

(Oh, and in answer to your post about writing more… yes, I'm looking forward to that.)

Wonderful. We run on autopilot a lot and just go with the flow, until moments where we re-evaluate and become aware of whether or not we're on the right path. I want to build a weekly habit of asking these kinds of questions.

    Oooh yes. Good move.

Thanks for sharing more of the insights from your life. I know that many of us reading this can identify and glean something from it. Best wishes as you refocus your perspective.

I don't need to ask myself why I should be there after I saw that picture!! Where is the thin line between want and should??

  8. Karl (2013-12-20) #

I'm here to make a difference in people's lives. Help is my word for 2014. Even if it means losing money on a project I want to be of help first.

LOL ... I wondered if and when you'd end up making that move to somewhere in NZ ... we loved our time in New Zealand in 1986-87. Great adventures. Sailed back to Wellington with friends in a 50 ft sailboat in what ended up a gale; the ferries stopped sailing; heading up into wellington harbor on the engine power a smaller sailboat was being towed in ... no mast ... ripped right off. Getting to shore was a welcome relief. :-)

You are in New Zealand? Nice! If you run into Tim Finn would you ask him to check out the Centrifugal Satz Clock? I have him on a list of living artists who might really resonate with the project. (Elvis Costello, Billy Joel, Lang Lang, Yoko Ono, etc etc) I know its a long shot but just being born was a long shot too.

And by the way, anyone you want to meet from Salt Lake City, I can likely arrange that too!

Good luck and avoid the poisonous spiders!

    Awesome!

I've also heard great things about Costa Rica. Some eco-villages are forming there, e.g. http://www.osamountainvillage.net

A colleague of mine, founder of GameChangers500 -- http://gamechangers500.com -- also lives in Costa Rica (in another area, not Osa Mountain)

It's a shame when you do live like this and others feel the need to criticise you for it. Maybe because they don't understand, don't have the means or ambition, come from another generation or place where this was frowned upon, etc. Some criticize it as "you keep starting over." But they don't realize it's all part of the same continuous journey. You can go everywhere and be home, if you want to.
Exactly. Like someone that lives in a huge house, but spends all their time in just one room. We live in a huge (earth-sized) house. Kind of silly not to visit other rooms, if you can. — Derek

Good discipline, Derek, following your instincts -and I empathize. Been giving thought to this question recently (because there are more years behind me than in front of me). I'm here (as we all are, I believe) 1) to achieve something positive; make a contribution, if you will. And, 2) to experience as much enjoyment as I can.

For the untamed heart, here is never the place to be. Now that I'm 50, here is fine! Good to hear from you again. Miss you at CDBaby, though they're still the best thing going for us musicians in the digi age. Looks like you've improved your view. I'll pray for your writing, that it flows like water through your mind, heart and body. It's probably the most satisfying thing we can do wherever we are. Best to you! Merry Christmas

    Nice one Derek.

    Enjoy the sunshine!

How fortunate we all are to be so mobile and have so many choices.
I'm in Panama City investing in a city apartment, and, with it, the future of this astonishingly dynamic economy surrounding the expansion of the Panama Canal. My partner is here to found a center for music improvisation offering winter workshops to professional musicians. He's opening another one in the south of Spain, where we go when the weather is warmer there. I'm invested in an apartment in Spain, too. And I'm making a new recording of original songs and, after that, a new book, while getting ready for another Japan concert tour next summer. Not really asking "why" these days. Just following my inner muse, and, whew, she's a drill sargeant!!

  26. John Stringer (2013-12-20) #

Love it! Congrats on this path! Love following what you are up to and seeing how life unfolds.

I've been programming Objective C and getting (dare I say) really good at it. I take myself into town on my bicycle, it takes 5 minutes. I sit in a cafe (lots to choose from). But people seem to insist on chatting to me! So one day, when I sell enough apps, I would love to buy a small house in rural scotland and code for fun whilst looking at the changing colours on the side of a mountain. ZEN + watch this space :)

  30. Steve Borek (2013-12-20) #

Way cool Derek. I've been asking the same question myself the last few years. Good luck down unda! (I'd like to know what you thought of Singapore and Asia. Did you blog about your experiences?) p.s. I'd like you to be a virtual guest speak for my professional business and life coaches group. Meets the first Thursday of the month at 11a ET. I'll send you an email to see if you have an interest. No worries if you don't.

why ami here? well, specifically because my mom and my dad had sex. why am i here now writing this comment? i was an original member of the host baby family and i'm on this email list. why am i here, where i'm writing this comment? my choice and my relationship with my partner. i play, record, produce and write music. i'm comfortable. i'm on medicare (so you know i'm over sixty five years of age). i got here by hard work, sacrifice, the daily challenge to learn and the desire to create. as stated by many others we are here as custodians/guardians not owners of our planet . use as you will and give back as you should. peace.

This one hit home. I asked myself the exact same question almost 2 years ago. Exhausted, strung out and over-stressed, overweight, unhealthy, working two f/t jobs, I suddenly had the opportunity to move to SoCal. I hesitated, though, afraid to make that change. But then...frustrated from going back & forth...I shouted out to no one your exact phrase "Why am I here?" Answer: [crickets]. And, now, here I am, in my paradise, back to feeling me again. And, now, I know why I'm here. Thanks, Derek.

    Derek,
Great question especially at this time of year. Seems to me that the real great thing is not only to question but to discover the answer and to do something about it. Obviously, you did! Good luck in NZ.

  43. Arnold Stolting (2013-12-20) #

Ironically I'm just watching a documentary on the topic of "life after death".
Many of us who believe that we are simply "passing through" as we spend time on this planet, usually ask the the question "why am I here?" However it then becomes a much deeper question.

  44. Bliss Wood (2013-12-20) #

I heard this same question from my 87 year old mom when she was in the hospital a week before she died. Her parents, her husband, her siblings, and all her friends had already died. I wasn't sure if she meant "the hospital" or "here on earth". I responded simply "it's where you are supposed to be for the moment". She accepted that.
I was a "back to the land" hippie from the 70's. I'm still living that dream...40 years on the homestead now. The Simple Life is a Good Life...for me.

Since you wrote about needing to leave the US, I've always wondered about whether "for a while" needs to be tacked on. Mostly because I'm not ready to move and not come back.

So this announcement really resonates with me. I'm asking the questions and the still want to be here in Vegas for a while, now making note to ask again next year, and often :)
I like for all preferences to have “… for now” added to the end. “I don't like peanut butter… for now.” “I like big cities … for now.” Nice to acknowledge that our tastes and needs change. — Derek

We are here to learn where we need to be, and how that happens is being still so you will know where, "here" is. Always a delight hearing from you Derek.

  54. Tom Stein (2013-12-20) #

Yes, I've dreamed of moving to the exact place you are. I also want to learn more about Asia. It seems to me that you are always a step ahead. So, you are where you'd like to be, that is a good thing. The picture is amazing. Thanks for sharing!

Recently I got active on certain websites focused on moving to NZ. I've put in a number of job applications. I'd really love to come there to teach, live and work. Likely someday I will....meanwhile I focus on my own writing, learning, playing (there are great musicians in Boston and I get to play with some of the finest of them).

I've asked that question frequently, and I know why I am here, but at the same time the reasons are also expiring. I need to go learn more about Asia first. I actually applied to about a dozen jobs in Singapore recently as well. I'm fascinated by Asia.

I want to go where I can contribute in a meaningful way. I want to live as an expat. I want to explore unfamiliar cultures, languages, food. I want to improve the lives of others, especially in "developing" countries. I want to help with developing our global (music) industry and the education and training programs that will require.

Emerging markets is a funny term, because it implies that somehow these more rapidly growing countries will eventually "emerge".

I am glad for your writing because they always make me think a little deeper and longer. I hope that one of these days we will have the chance to break bread, and look forward together to the journeys ahead.

I'd appreciate contact from other like-minded individuals, with the aim of swapping ideas, networking and potential cross-cultural collaborations. The best way to connect is via LinkedIn.com using my email address [email protected] here is my profile: http://www.linkedin.com/in/tomstein1/

Thanks Derek for writing and everyone else for the great comments.

What a great question and what an amazing answer! Well done, Derek! I can fully understand. Doing exactly the same thing - only going to Scotland - is still on my list to focus on writing. Something to look forward to and to - work for it. Till then I enjoy my current home and you will surely enjoy new home! Happy Holidays, Derek, and a happy New Year!

  56. Gerard (2013-12-20) #

Perhaps you're an adventurer at heart, and possibly you've also discovered that home (and happiness) is where we choose it to be... Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it helps me think about "why am I here" as well.

Glad your writing again. I love the way you navigate this beautiful world. We met once at SXSW, and you were so present when we spoke. It reminded me to be that way as well when meeting new people. I went to Berklee, met my husband ( 31 years!) made some music, made some records, started a booking agency..I still do all of it--but i too wanted to be where i could have more quite and live by the sea..find a place I would thrive in emotionally. We moved to Nova Scotia and now I can add organic farmer to my description of what i do-who I am.. love the writing-- keep inspiring us! We all should remember we all do have the power to change-- and that moving about when we need change or changing up what we do for a living or how we navigate this world, is truly living.

I moved several times inthe past few years and have just moved into a new house just after Thanksgiving. I had been living in weekly hotels and worse for the last 3 months and now I am home. Relocation is interesting and we all have our own reasons for it. I find the more I plan lately, the less things have worked out in the short run so for the holiday season, I am just going to go with the flow and see what happens. I am grateful to be where I am. Thanks for your email.

  61. Rene (2013-12-20) #

Being on the edge to cancel an old project by the end of the year (which taught me a lot about myself but feels like running out of fuel) and starting a new one (with the focus on implementing all the stuff I learned in the last years about myself and the things I really wanted to do from the beginning, without knowing them in the first run just because of a lack of experience) I can absolutely feel you.

I hope, I can manage it from where I live right now (because I promised my Dad on the deathbed to be there for my Mum and support her, when my heavy tabacco-smoking Dad died from lung cancer within 12 weeks since his diagnosis two years ago) - with some vacations into nature to take deep and clean breaths (will go hiking in the forests of West Germany with a deep connection to my childhood where I often choosed to play alone in the forest over playing competitive soccer games).

All of my best wishes to you, Derek. - Thank you for this woderful post.

I do feel you. - Stay focused.

Very nice Derek. In my experience, once that question bubbled up...I had somehow deep down already set my eyes on the horizon looking for what was next. What if the answer is, "Because another person needs me to be here," or "Because other people need me to be here"?

Or, "Because I can't afford to be anywhere else for the indefinite future."

Moving on simply because you're ready is a luxury not everybody has. Be grateful for your good luck and proud of your good choices.
I would challenge those reasons. They're usually not true, and are hiding a more honest answer. Maybe you like feeling needed, or don't want to give up some things to be able to afford a move. But “can't” usually isn't accurate. — Derek

My most synchronistic and spiritually rewarding moments in life have been after letting go of a particular living pattern and walking through the doors of possibility. Knowing why you are doing anything is the key to living with awareness and thereby more effectively. Keep loving life (wherever you are) and thanks for continuing to inspire us Derek.

    GREAT QUESTION, Derek.

I ask myself it, not in a geo-location sense, but in a "life progress" sense - often.

It helps me course correct when required, and make sure what I'm doing NOW is aligned with not just an over-arching purpose but what's currently of interest and kindles my passion.

Some things I've dropped along the way were ones I had once been intensely passionate about - but lost their charm somewhere, and were becoming burdensome.

On my blog, that I revived after reading your recent post, I wrote about it too - in a slightly different way: http://moneypowerwisdom.com/change/

When I was a young adult athlete I competed in Auwkland New Zealand but never made it down to Christ Church on the South Island. Also spent time in Brisbane, Australia. It is an extremely interesting time in my life and a stimulating part of the world for the indiginous culture and the wildlife. I hope you find peace of mind and productivity you seem to be searching for.

Once again, thanks for sharing this great post, Derek.

As for me, i'm happy to say i found the peace i was searching.
It doesn't depend on where I am, what I own, or who i'm with.
It might seem cliché, but i found that kind of peace through my spiritual connection with Jesus-Christ.
I could be without money, but if i still have Jesus, i would consider myself richer than Carlos Slim Helu, the (financially) richest man on earth.

I wish you all the work, focus, writing, and coding you need... And Jesus, the son of God. :-)

I'm glad you have the luxury to be alone, be away and be free to do what you want to do intellectually. It's good for others to see you do that because it gives them something to strive for. I can't help feeling sorry for your family, though. Bet they miss you a lot~

They're here, and were part of the decision. I just tell the story with an “I” for simplicity. — Derek

Fabulous question, Derek. I need to ask myself the same. I'm most certainly a fan of solitude (sometimes to a fault, according to loved ones), but my experience/excuse to work in solitude is sometimes a distraction in itself. Distraction to avoid pausing, avoid realizing what I feel (or don't want to feel). Peace to you, Derek, in the space you find yourself.

  82. Darlene Cavalier (2013-12-20) #

DAMN! That one hit hard, Derek. Thanks. :)

thanks for this. Ask myself the same question everyday, "what am I doing here/why am I doing this job..etc?" 2014 escape plan.

The big reveal is you and I and all creation are created and purposed to give glory to God. Regardless of where you reside. The world wants to look elsewhere for reason but it always returns to the same answer. It's the sensitive spirit in humans that connect with God. After all being human means being made in the image of God; part intellect, part flesh and part spirit. Ask Him to reveal himself in your life. He will.

  88. Brian (2013-12-20) #

    Hey Derek,
Nice choice! I drive down to a river near my house to write for about 1-2 hours as much as possible. When I don't get there I find the "noise" from the "real world" distracts me from my goals in life.

There is a great book called "Loving what is" by Byron Katie. She's got a great line that always brings me present when I'm not liking where I am (or how I got here). I'm paraphrasing but she basically says that you are meant to be where or else you would not be. To argue or hate it is insanity. If you listen to audiobooks I recommend it. Her voice is hypnotic.
    Peace,
    Brian

Regardless of where we are, the question is "am I doing what I should be doing?" If the answer is " I'm not sure" or "no", then "what do I do to make sure" and " what is holding me back and when do I start?"

I love this. I think that if most if us asked ourselves this while working the extra hours we might remember that when we are gone, work will replace us. But waiting at home is the one (or are the ones) that never could. And suddenly the value of being there instead of here becomes crystal clear. Thanks for the question!

  92. Johnny Azer (2013-12-20) #

Derek I am happy for you. You are a true Renaissance man. Man, I am sure with that view South Island is solitude. After all Ihave been thru...I ask...why am I still here?

    You are inspiring Derek.
You be where you want to be!

  94. Kathryn Frederick (2013-12-20) #

How lovely... that alone is a good reason to be there. Asking yourself why you are in a place is a good question to ask yourself. I asked myself that when I was living in Nevada and the next thing I knew I was living in Portland.

  95. Charley Buckland (2013-12-20) #

Thanks Derek for being where you are and always everywhere else as well. I'm reading what you write and am greatful. Luck on you.

Hahaha I so didn't see that coming. So there you are. You made me laugh while walking down the street in Santa Monica. I once write a song about the myth of the location of success, called The Next Seattle http://cdbaby.com/joematzzie.
Anyway, the question of why am I here is obviously 2 questions; the events that brought you here, and the purpose or thing you're supposed to get, or role you're supposed to play. Maybe the events that brought you here are the correct answer. Maybe there is no purpose, no meaning. Maybe it's absurd and funny.

Rest for your soul. It is what you want. ''I want silence, solitude, and wide open spaces.'' If the picture you sent represents the nature that you can see every day then I understand your inspiration for writing something like this. You can consider yourself a happy man.

  100. Jarret Dreicer (2013-12-20) #

I attended an IHI conference the other day and heard that, "You cannot fatten a cow by weighing it." The speak was referring to "improvement projects" vs "research projects. The concept was, of course, intended to apply to "data" and not getting too hung-up on the measurement and lose sight of making positive change. Long story long....your blurb made me think of the "cow quote" and question the value of frequently asking ourselves questions like "why am I here". On one hand, it's great. You ensure you're not caught in the muck (in the purposeless or just in the wrong place) and lose site of the more important goal. On the other hand, how much time and energy are we spending on the "measurement"...that could be spent on living. I am confident that you are living out there Derek. Just make sure that you are!

More than a solitary yet powerful question, this seems to me to be an exercise of sorts. One that I am particularly familiar with at present. The question, one of the earlier steps, is followed by an answer... Repeat until no valid answers pop up.
Then, if answers were aligned with your perceived purpose or goals, smile and continue, or change! If answers were echoed by contradictions, continue to next step. Next step is evaluating goals and aspirations from the context of where you physically are. Funny you talk about coding... I don't anymore but I still see the logic statements do this till then, if then else... This kind of thing must be glaring for someone who is developing code constantly.
Once goals, aspirations, wants, needs have been clearly defined, establish a plan to right the course. Then... But probably not lastly, do it.
My trouble is getting caught up around these last couple of bits. Funny that they also happen to be the ones I least describe. In fact if I really think about it, its the last one that is the issue. Doing it. I can't help but wonder if I've messed up in a previous step... Goals not defined accurately, what if I don't really know what I want.. or need? But I do, right? Sure I do, so enough false starts and on with doing it. Point A (where I am) is here, point B, that place I have characterized, is, well... There... But it's the gazillion points in between that cause the uncertainty, the gory details! I'll summarize, prepare the house for sale (finish the damn bathroom tile!), submit notice to terminate employment (if I'm honest, and I make it a point to be, I can't wait for this!) Donate, sell, pack, hide, worldly possessions... This is a summary?!... Bla bla bla place to live, three dogs, New source of income (damn the man), yada yada.
The alternative? Drive into Wilmington in the morning lamenting the inadequate length of time you just spent with the 5 of the most important mammals in your life. Work... I should be more enthusiastic but am not.. and drive home for the whirlwind that will be the 1 to 1.5 hours spent with the little one before bed. Then reload for the next day, read too long into the night.
So, put that way, the answer is obvious, right? Damn habits... Damn path of least resistance, damn illusions.
    -Sam

I'm here to observe, learn, teach, and help other's along the way as much as I can when I can. I'm here to create things I enjoy creating - share it with other's if and when I think it is ready and hopefully enjoy them enjoying what I create. And all along the way have as much fun as possible while doing all of that no matter where I'm doing it. Something like that - I think. :)

  114. Johnny Bennett (2013-12-20) #

Why am I here? Because I'm lucky. To quote Mr. Allen "The man who said "I'd rather be lucky than good" saw deeply into life. People are afraid to face how great a part of life is dependent on luck. It's scary to think so much is out of one's control. There are moments in a match when the ball hits the top of the net, and for a split second, it can either go forward or fall back. With a little luck, it goes forward, and you win. Or maybe it doesn't, and you lose." Now I could say this year I lived in London, Paris, and San Francisco, and that I was surrounded by the world's most beautiful woman, and some of the world's most intelligent men. I could also say that I, as I often have in my life, went places and saw things that no amount of money or power could buy. All of which is true. But am I here for a reason? Because I'm talented? Because I work hard? It's doubtful. I believe it's just luck and always has been.

Interesting. I agree that with one life we should do what we can do be happy. Especially those of us with such options. However, 99.9% of the world don't have the luxury of choice like that. Some just want clean water to drink or family. Thanks for sharing.

  140. Nathan Quade (2013-12-20) #

First of all, thank you Derek for the pause that your quiry provided in my evening. I feel that we can all benefit by more frequently taking a moment or two, or longer to observe our present. How do we feel? Are we happy? Are we growing? Are we giving a positive energetic to our world as we are passing through it?
Expansion, I believe is why we are here. To take an individual and collective movement forward and enrich our experience, as well as that of our fellow planetary inhabitants in the process. And...to have fun!
If we do indeed create our own reality, and I believe we do...then we get to take responsibility for all of it. We get to continually adjust our experience to have it reflect exactly as we want it to.
As it is said..."wherever you go, there you are"...Love yourself, love each other and the world is suddenly your home, wherever in it you may find yourself.
Thanks Rog for sharing the link to this.

I love this. And I agree, it's always important to ask Why Am I Here? I personally always ask myself "How Did I get here?" And not just location- birth, earth, and creation- all of it. I do believe in God and that He created us- and that He created us each with a purpose. Big or small-it's all big. We can all have a big influence to those around us- in person, or virtually. I dream of the same things as you, though, to work/create all day but around nature. For now, though, I helped give birth and create two tiny souls who rely on me (and live on me) but I dream to sit in solitude- but for now I will appreciate my 18 month old laying beside me in bed while I type you this note. I pray for you, I appreciate you and you have changed my life - CDBaby, Music- and your kindness and posts. Keep up the fabulous work. Your honest posts inspire and give me boldness to write from my heart as well. Take Care.- Tiana

Derek, you are here because you were created by God for HIS OWN ENJOYMENT. You are here because HE wants to share with you HIS plan for your life and HIS Kingdom. It does not mean that what you are doing right now is not what God would want for you. He has blessed you with GREAT insight and talents. You did not get that from yourself. Its His gifts to you. Your ideas that bless mankind are the very thing HE accomplishes through you. The Lord however is wooing you. He desires to hear from you. He waits in great expectation every hour of every day to hear you speak to HIM...to acknowledge Him...to give Him credit for all that you know and accomplish. Begin to call on Him and receive the free gift of salvation by accepting His son into your heart and become a huge part of His Kingdom. Then youll never ask again 'why am I here?' youll know why and begin to grow in a bigger understanding of your full and complete assignment on earth. Youre not finished yet! Think on how glorious it would be to get all of your new assignments from the Creator of the Universe! Now there is a project for ya! NO CORPORATE THINK TANK CAN COMPARE! Hes on standby right now...how long are you going to make HIM wait? He loves you sooooo much!

Really enjoyed reading this. Stimulating and thought provoking for sure, but it just starts to get interesting when it ends!!! Does not every arrival in a desired and longed for destination, start out with heightened awareness and exuberant focus? Would like to see where the story goes :-)
So yes, examine your life and take inventory of what you set out to do, what you actually did and what you want to do from here on in. If you can relocate at the drop of a hat to a place you long to be, why not?

“Why am I here” and “where do I stand” are the 2 questions I often ask myself, so that I can survive this violent and unjust world.
When I meditate on these phrases, I clearly feel I am the result of the ultimate Love. A kind of Love that never dies, just like the Sun. This tells me where I have come from, what is my mission, and where I am going to go after I accomplish my mission. Whatever it is, it is not worldly, but this physical world is the place where I have to learn, experience, grow and eventually return to where I came from.
I am quite confident about the mission I have to accomplish. My mission is to be like the Sun that heats all of us unconditionally; the Sun that is “needless”.
I am here to learn how to become “needless” because that’s the only way I can give unconditionally. I am here to learn that my pre-written destiny, whatever it is, is the best and I should not fight against because no matter how much I fight, I cannot change something that is already written, so I am learning to let go and float on the waves of the ocean.
I am here to represent the ultimate Love, through my “actions”, not through bunch of meaningless words --- and through things that can make a difference – through bringing something new to people’s lives that can make them experience the feeling of “dimension”, “gravity” and “peace”. Music brings peace into our lives, and through my music and my projects that engage people more closely with music I am aiming to bring a different kind of peace into this cruel world…

    Hi Derek!
So goodbye Singapore, for real? No more 6 months here, 6 months there.
I just spent 2 months in SG and came back to France last week.
    Great city though.
All the best for 2014 and yes, trees and birds are the way to go :-)

    Cheers,
We'll see. ☺ I love and miss Singapore. And I'm still officially a resident. — Derek

On a much smaller scale and shorter cycles I also go through phases of being very social (usually in summer) to quite reclusive in the winter. I live as modestly as possible and would be happy to stay indoors for most of the three months of cold. I enjoy being up in the wee hours when the night belongs to no one but me; there's not a sound and my mind can go anywhere.

  167. Ariel Joseph (2013-12-20) #

How wonderful for you; it is so beautiful and peaceful - that one need never ask "Wy am I here?" The answer will always be obvious (for peace); but of course we don't ALWAYS need peace. Now is the time for you there - and you will have other times somewhere else. I have been wishing to be somewhere else: living in a cottage on a cliff somewhere on the English Coast… whee I can see and hear the sea - and walk each day to a tiny town to pick up the post and buy my necessaries. THEN I will ONLY write for my bread (and wine). Think that for me, please.

Derek, I had a chance to hear you speak a few years back at a music conference in LA.

I remember people cramming in like sardines for the chance to hear you, and you did not disappoint. The question "how do I make it" must have been asked of you 30 times in a row in different phrasings and levels of panic, yet you were unfailingly helpful, wise, gentle, generous, scrupulously kind yet always slightly amused -- by yourself more anyone or anything.

And while the knowledge you shared was great, I think people got even more out of your centeredness. You radiate "it's all going to be okay – it already is."

Thanks for this post. It makes me happy to know where you are on the planet.
Wow! Thanks Bryan! That's about the best compliment I could ever imagine! I really appreciate it. — Derek

This is the question I ask myself every January when I'm shoveling snow in sub-zero weather. And the answer is always "because I was born here." Dumb answer. Starting to take some steps to explore other parts of the world. Taking a recon trip to Nashville next week. I feel like moving South.
☺ Shoveling snow for my 30th winter is what got me to leave New York (Woodstock). I hope I never have another snowy winter. Growing up in Chicago, Boston, and New York was enough snow for one lifetime. — Derek

And my dream is to move to New Zealand, to live and to work there.
    So, my question is: how?
Because your story sounds like "I said to myself that I wanted to move to NZ and I moved". That easy? What about work? Visa? Citizenship?
For me it looks like VERY difficult thing to do...How?

    Thank you!

So important to ask ourselves that question regularly. Also important to step out of our comfort zone when we no longer have a 'why' in regards to our current situation. 177. Anton (2013-12-20) #

    Thanks for another good post.

Long ago I've seen one of your interviews, where you mentioned you've moved to Singapore with your wife. That's probably is just one or two years and then you're in New Zealand. That's awesome agility, but what is particularly interesting for me - how do you agree and arrange with your significant other? You move easily, does she do so? What about her friends, job, plans etc? Could you write about that, because speaking of myself I can imagine rapidly moving, but cannot even think about telling my beloved that hey, let's spend a couple of years in the other part of the world. And of course I don't know what to if/after she says 'no'.

Thanks, and have a good time there!
On our 2nd date, I asked her, “How would you feel about living in the rest of the world for the rest of your life?” She said yes, so we had a 3rd date. ☺ It was a condition of being with me, from the beginning. — Derek

Oh my gosh! That's such a beautiful picture and place! I'd love to see that in person.

Now, getting to the question, it's such a good one. I like the logic that if you have for the answer: "Either it will re-focus your reasons for being where you are, or it will make you realize your reasons have expired and you should be somewhere else." Without it being explained like this before, I identify with it because that's what I've been doing in life. You've just put it in words so plain. Right now, I'm needing to re-focus after settling in and getting things in place the way I'd like...still a few more things to do though. After that, a big refocus is coming up. However, maybe a vacation first. :-)

  182. Mark Remington (2013-12-20) #

WOW! You must be a clairvoiyant. Your timing for that question is amazing! that picture is beautiful and a great place to be. Now that you are there, are you ever coming back?

  183. Michael Max (2013-12-20) #

    Why? Because...Hell Yes!
So I've heard a wise man say.

Your comments come at a most appropriate time. I've just pulled the trigger on a retreat. To a place for quietude. For stillness. To recognize the in-between that I'm living. To give space to what is emerging
Because space is prayer. And space is trust. And space allows time to unfold in a non-linear way.

This seems like easy questioning when someone has unlimited funds in the bank. Most people these days can barely pay their rent, let alone up and move from Singapore to New Zealand. Having said that, the message that should be gleaned from your blog is that one should always question where they are and why they are there. Who makes these decisions and haven't they changed since then? It doesn't necessarily mean you move geography; maybe it means you move from your relationship, your job, your friends, your habits. Hopefully, your readers will apply this great message and apply it to their lives in the spirit you intended.

    Hey Derek,

that's the worst decision you can make in my opinion. NZ is such a bad place to live. I also like to write code and hack on Linux, but the total isolation really drove me nuts paired with the bad climate. Yes, the landscape might be nice for the first time, but after a few months I got really depressed there and just wanted to get out.

I attended meetups and stuff, but there are other things where NZ just sucks:
    a) safety: Asia feels much safer than New Zealand to me. Just try to go out in a park in the night. Where I lived you don't want to do that..
    b) inconvenience: Asia has convenience stores everywhere, so many good food choices, etc. NZ has nothing. Post office close at 5pm and open until late meant 6pm in a Starbucks.wtf?
    c) Boring: nothing to do except enjoying the landscape and doing some adventures outside, but the lack of people events and culture is nothing for me.
    d) A country designed for cars, not people.
    e) Housing sucks. Not kidding, enjoy the winter on the south island
    f) Violence and drugs: There are many youth gangs in NZ

I've some serious health issues, but that doesn't stop me from reevaluating my life periodically like this. I may not be able to change locations, so when I ask why am I here, I'm asking why am I hereo n this earth, and am I doing what's right for me in this moment, for the greater good of myself and others. I love that you actually change places, but obviously that's not necessary to refresh ourselves. Just being aware and conscious can keep us in the right groove.

Thanks for such an inspiring post. NZ must be beautiful.

You ask “Why am I here?” You list reasons which make me feel sad. I don’t quite know why.

You say were once social … now you are not. You say you crave intellectual stimulation … yet you also long for silence, solitude, and wind open spaces.

You are in Nelson New Zealand … to work … focus … write … launch. A place where all the things you need reside. From what I read, a wonderful place for someone as creative as yourself.

Forgive me ... I’ve been feeling melancholy all day. Perhaps that’s why some of your post made me feel sad. (again I don't know why) Twenty five years ago I more or less lost my Dad. (His body died three months later.)

Twenty five years ago I lost the freedom to choose where, how, and WHY I lived. Eventually giving up my job … and dreams … to care for my invalid mother. A sad broken woman who had abused me horribly throughout my childhood.

Before his death … I promised my Dad I would be a good daughter and keep Mom safe.

I believed in order to be worthy of unconditional love … I had to be willing to give it.

I believed treating my Mom better than she had treated me … might help heal my bruised and weary soul.

While I paid a terrible price for my decision … I don’t regret my choice.

Mom died five years after Dad … I’ve been struggling ever since to regain my balance and my health.

I spent twenty five years trying to reconnect with my brother (and only sibling). The hope of our being family to one and other fueled my spirit.

Twenty five years writing, studying computer programming, microcomputer repair, music, painting, drawing, taking photographs (my brother & father had been photographers), and pouring my soul into a book about my struggle to become whole despite my abuse.

I’m sad and out of sorts because my brother died last October and I have no remaining family. In my heart of hearts I’d always hoped he and I would reconnect one day and sort out the horrors of our childhood together.

So today … the day my Dad suffered his first horrible heart attack … I long for family more than other days. My brother was the same age as my Dad was when he died.

When my brother died I lost the biggest WHY for my being here. So on days like today … when the pain of losing everyone I once held dear me fills me with unspeakable longing. I struggle to find good reasons for being.

I wish I could be as resolute as yourself. I admire your ability to live life. Your journey and the path you walk are the stuff dreams are made of.

    I enjoy reading your posts.

I love it! :) I'm still young and have the travel bug, want to travel and travel a lot, experience and explore more, but in the end I think I'm going to end up in a peaceful place like New Zealand, too. Nature is a magical place like music. We spend too much time sitting inside while human beings were not born to sit all days long.

Well you certainly picked a great place for silence, solitude and wide open spaces. Having just returned from 2 weeks in the South Island we were constantly wondering why we couldn't see any signs of civilisation no matter which direction we looked. Though the scenery is so magnificent it also may be a distraction at times!

Correction to quote in post #85: "Seclusion is the price of greatness." (Seclusion; not solitude)

Now comes the question - what is the difference? One cursory definition is that seclusion is the state of enjoying one's solitude, while solitude may otherwise equate with loneliness.

Derek, this is Great. Like just about everything that you write, blog, publish, do, lecture...it's GREAT! Here's my question: from the gutter of Normal People's Lives, how do we be like you? I'd love to move to New Zealand's South Island. I'd love to have had great lives in California, Portland, London, New York, Singapore (well, I've had great lives in CA & NY), so what's the formula? Literally, logistically, what's the code? How do you handle emigration issues? How do you just MOVE to New Zealand's South Island, and live and work in the Garden of Eden on your computer? I'm sure you have an idea about how Anyone can do it if You can: you just have to have the will, the imagination to make it happen. But I feel a little stuck. I read blogs from great, TED Talk-giving geniuses like you, and each time I think, "Yeah, what the FUCK am I DOING? WHY AM I HERE? YEAH!!!!?" And no question: asking myself the question of 'Why I'm Here' is beyond valid. But I also often find my face pressed up against the glass, watching the moving lips of a motivational speaker whose transcontinental, pancultural life is supposed to motivate me (and on whose former company/website I sell a trickle of music), and I end up thinking, "Sure, I'd love to live on New Zealand's South Island and study Asian cultures from Singapore, but here I am, being me, and it doesn't sound nearly as exciting as being you." So, what's the catch? Am I just not actualized enough? If not, why not? Where does Sivers end and I begin? When is it time to shut off the motivational speakers' conduit and accept the more modest conditions of my own reality, that I don't have the success or money to move to any country I want and live life on a desired level of charm? I ask, as a plebian. Surely we can't all be as great as you, can we? What would be the definition of Great, then? And - I love and respect you - or your brand...no shit. Yes, thank you for sharing, inspiring, enlightening...but how do I get from the trenches to New Zealand's South Island, where I'm welcomed indefinitely as a foreign national? Do you have an easy answer up your sleeve, as a Great?
Great question. I actually don't mean for my life to motivate anyone. Really I wish my example would be ignored, and you'd just take the theme or lesson instead. This wasn't about New Zealand or Singapore or me. It's only about regularly asking yourself why you're doing what you're doing, and making a change if it's time. That could mean quitting drinking, or moving in with your girlfriend, or applying to nursing school, or switching to an apartment down the block with a better view. Read it metaphorically and apply it to your situation. (That said, 4-Hour Work Week has great tips on how to do world-travel type things for way cheaper than you imagined.) — Derek

    Derek

I think this is admirable question to answer but before that comes (I think) Who am I? I say this only because many (or is that most) people don't know who they are beyond a bushel of acquired skills, a job title and auto-biographical referencing. Absent an answer to that question, to leave one place and substitute it for another - no matter how tranquil - will only leave people wanting more, or something else. (The mind's belly is never full after all.) For me, I have three children aged 17, 14 and 10 and they come first. That said my parents lived a very peripatetic life when I was a child and I coped. But the one thing it's taken me a long time to find is a place I can call home. I think, even if we only live in one place for a while, we still need somewhere we feel settled, close to nature and without the pressure to look.

Sorry that's probably way too long an answer. For you, I can understand the need to stretch and to understand what life is all about, but as I said for most people substituting a locus in quo is no substitute for asking Who am I.

    Best wishes

That is funny-I read this on a phone screen so I didn't see the punch line up front but all the while I kept thinking you would move to OZ or NZ and here you already had...

    Enjoy... It looks amazing!

I have the same sense of "no one place-yet anyway-is the be all end all home" for me, which is probably why I am still bouncing country to country doing gigs.

Maybe some people are just meant to move around a lot?

Welcome to Godzone Derek :) I lived in New Zealand for 7 years and it was amazing. I can recommend the scuba diving :) But then, like you, I questioned what I wanted and why I was there ... now I am living in central London, and it is inspiring in so many different ways. I wanted history and culture, and architecture and artists and where strange people from cultures all over the world can be who they want without being stared at. I am remaining location independent though, because, like you, I want to be able to move on again. Thanks for sharing, Joanna

I'm pretty envious of your ability to live where you want. The biggest problems facing me about this are immigration laws and money. Changing the country you live in just when you feel you must be somewhere else is really luxurious.

New Zeland was where Lord of the Rings was filmed. After that it came to be known as one of the most beautiful parts of the world. I wouldn't even ask why am I here? I'll most probably shout "I am so lucky to be here", but it seems that everywhere you go you are happy and everywhere you go is home to you. So I wonder if this place called home is within you, you only move through parts of the physical world but the feeling that it is home is identified from within you. Why is that? Perhaps because you are an exception to the rule when it comes to people. You have the special knowledge of knowing that success came to you in the most extraordinary way and with it came happiness and prosperity. Thats why anywhere you go feels great.

Hello Eric, Looks like a good place to be. Here are the lyrics from a tune I am re editing on that seem appropriate.

All the things that I see when I lay down to sleep
Are they things that are behind me Or moments yet to be
A road that’s not been traveled
    or one I’ve left behind
Where do they all come from
Oh these pictures in my mind

    Loves that seem forgotten
    Some I’ve never known
    An emptiness surrounds me
    Even when I’m not alone
A different time a different place
    Heartache from long ago
An image in a burning fire
    Another dark and lonely road

A face that seems familiar but I know that I’ve never met
A scene that has so much detail
In a place I’ll never get
Like the sky line of a city
    with great mountains far behind
Where do they all come from
Oh these pictures in my mind

Some place where I am going
Some where I’ve yet to find
    Some wrong that needs undoing
To give me peace of mind
A person I must see again
From some distant point in time
A message from some other place
    These pictures in my mind
    Mysteries twisted all around
    So many subtle signs
So many things I hope to learn From these pictures in my mind

If you need to remove excess cobwebs or need a break from writing, try the Milford Track. there are three important truths I've discovered about solitude:

No man should go through life without once experiencing healthy, even bored solitude in the wilderness, finding himself depending solely on himself and thereby learning his true and hidden strength.

    ~Jack Kerouac

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

    ~Henry David Thoreau, 1854

The mark of solitude is silence, as speech is the mark of community. Silence and speech have the same inner correspondence and difference as do solitude and community. One does not exist without the other. Right speech comes out of silence, and right silence comes out of speech.

    ~Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Why am I here? I am here because this is where God called me to be. What am I doing here? I am Loving God, Loving people, and sharing Jesus with everyone that I can; preaching for the local community at COWBOY COUNTRY CHURCH and reaching out to the world via the internet; I am enjoying my wife, children, and 14 grandkids; I am enjoying the Oklahoma hills on horseback and my "steel horse" Kawasaki; I am playing/singing/writing music; I am enjoying what I eat and drink and I am serving God; I am growing old but I am still fruitful: I am still "fat and flourishing". I am thankful to the good Lord for my many blessings and I give Him praise!!! ~Pastor Lynn

These are questions I pose to dentists and related health professionals when I speak to them on "Changing Lives: CAMBRA, Coaching, and a New Take on Cleaning." In summarizing this 3 hour talk, I created the 9 nuggets, the take-away points that I wanted attendees to remember. While the talk was full of technical points, the number ONE point I wanted people to take to their offices . . .

    Start With Why.

I have read the book twice, ordered "Leaders Eat Last," enrolled in Why University and will be working to grow further this year, focusing on WHY!

Derek; you're a true source of supreme wonderment and thank you so much for this last entry. My Rut, has deep adhesive walls, and my efforts to become un-stuck have rendered me scratching and crawling its surface for way too many years. Intellectually, I grasp and own my decision to be cornered into my-self built Rut, and by the same token, intellectually I know I will eventually meet ground level once more, find new shoes and walk again.

    Derek,

Excellent question. Traveling and living in major cities such as London, England; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Philadelphia; PA, Dubai, UAE; Nairobi, Kenya and Mogadishu, Somalia has helped me get closer to finding my true ambition. In my experience, there biggest factors to relocating are psychological factors. You tend to become so comfortable in your environment and forget to realise that your odds of succeeding can dramatically increase when you relocation. As PG noted down in his essay on 'Cities and Ambition,' cities give out messages. I personally think any location gives you subtle messages. I usually know I have to relocate when I feel like a second-class citizen and get bored!

    Derek !
    As usual........Wow!
I'd be more than happy, to share with you and yours the vast store of knowledge and understanding that I have amassed in my 72 years. Suffice it to say that in scanning my vast array of "little known facts of little interest" I settle on the punch line of a very old joke. "When asked, in an insane asylum' Why are we here,' of a resident. The reply was" Because we're not all there!" Is the question even relevant to the fact that we are here! That we are here is, by some, our only valid reason. There are schools of thought that would suggest that we are here seeking atonement, proper penance for our sins, others profess that our task is, to learn to "progress," to evolve. Each of us charged with doing so an an individual basis, adhering, of course to a generally accepted time scale for each accepted progression.Accompanied by a level of expectation of performance at each movement.
That's why therapists get the big money!
I had planned on waxing, if not philosophically, then at least interminably on several schools of thought pertinent to this subject. However it occurs to me that after very little of my own. thought . in my own time, I conclude that there is much less here than meets the eye and that after all thses years, I don't friggin know! I offer," The moving finger writes. And having writ, moves on. Nor all your piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel out a half a line. Nor all your tears wash out a word of it.

Why are you here? Because it's the place you need to be in this space in time. NZ was a very good choice -- moved here myself 16 months ago and have no regrets.

We are in a dream, so row row row, gently and with mindfulness.
Thanks for asking the question. I too have lived in some right places at the right time. This one is the dream I had at 7 years old.... living simply in Hawaii, writing, publishing, re-inventing myself once again.

    Derek, you're funny!(Smile)
I have asked myself that question many times and I've learned that where ever I am, I need to "Be still....." and glean whatever the universe (the Source) has for me in that space and time. I must say however, that you couldn't have picked a more beautiful place to "Be still"......Psalms 46:10. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

If you want to take a break, there are lots of great things to do in NZ. Near Nelson I recommend kayaking in Abel Tasman and Queen Charlotte Sound.

There's a movie by the name of A Home of our Own, with Kathy Bates. Based on true story, about a family that moved from their hectic L.A. apt, all the way to Idaho, in the 60's.

They literally stopped while driving when the saw a half-built shack, so they built it and moved in.

As a single person who isn't fond of staying that much longer here in L.A, making just under 90k a year, still can't afford a house that is close enough to job to avoid an hour long commute. It's really unhealthy for the human body to be in sitting position for more than 30 min twice a day, so I live in an expensive apt within walking distance from work.

But I'd sooo love living anywhere else.. but definitely in a house. But the thing is, I do *not* savor the idea of trying to go freelance so that i could move to a nice peaceful rural area. You tend to work many more hours than an employee.

For the time being, I'm making the choice to save up to about 75k, and then make the move, buy a house somewhere idaho-ish, or iowa-ish or montana-ish, and then not have a huge leftover mortgage debt, so the stress to get a programmer job in one of those midwest states is not so great.

Not sure how quality a choice this is, to make it, but for now seems reasonable. Wish I could figure out how to freelance in such a way that i don't work more than 40 hours, and know how to have steady clients without excess time marketing.

I just want to code :)

I'm so glad we were able to meet a few years back in SG Derek! I'm honored to know you. But, I'm very happy for you that you've found your remote, quiet retreat where you can focus inward for now too! ;)

I'm in New Zealand too Derek. Not that far from where that picture was taken. I'm living on a big old sailing schooner on Lake Wakatipu. I make a living playing gigs around Queenstown. Last time I replied to one of your blogs I was living in Warsaw playing bars and clubs in Eastern Europe. I know why I'm here. Come and say hello if your in the area. I'd be interested to meet you. .I'll take you sailing.

WOW! I think that people like you will never be satisfied in one place. I am that way which is the reason I moved to Asia. I wish that I had the funds to move to another country when I wanted to...hahaha! Your life is so cool!

Taking stock of life options is important in Life's journey. I'm now 78 years and have had my share of travels, mostly as a musician and as a family visitor. For those who seek, experience, knowledge, or change, it is like shooting an azsmuth (?)to find where in the universe one is occupying, so to plot the way to one's destination or goal. I've learned that wherever one's life is headed, it is most rewarding to enjoy the trip getting there !

Ahhh, Grasshopper, you are arriving. When you discover that all of your challenges are internal and have nothing to do with your surroundings, you can achieve your potential anywhere. You will search and you will find that all you sought was with you all the time. Happiness isn't something you find. It is something you take with you. Thank you for sharing your journey. May others read and learn.

I loved Nelson when I visited. The market on a weekend was great. I seem to remember some crazy statistic about the amount of sunlight that place gets. As someone wondering 'why am I here' about living in the gloomy UK this is something that fascinates me. I feel so much better when there is sunshine.

Please write more about being able to focus.

I am extremely grateful you are posting again. I missed your words.

Derek! You speak well. Sounds like a shaman from some lost tribe somewhere. You speak the truth. Or is it just movies I've seen. The two voices, the opposite echo. In my case, it's because it's almost too late to change my place of residence, so I change my point of view. I just wrote an homage to Nelson Mandela, at first under duress of tears, then understanding that such a thing must be done, honestly. I hope the music I eventually come up with is up to at least Peter Gabriel status, or better. Why else am I here? Who else gives a damn? I have lost the thread that holds most of us to our path. Still I rise and follow what idea was first in my mind. There are not that many any more.

A Fantastic share! To be able to go where your quest, "Why am I Here," leads is priceless. I lived and worked in Australia in the 80s and had the opportunity to visit New Zealand...I know what you mean when you said you wanted wide open spaces and solitude. I remember several places that meet that description there. I've often asked myself that same question..and always get a different answer. lol

I don't really ask myself that question (but since you mentioned it...). I spent too many years living day to day where ever I was. These days I'm always thinking about where I'm going. Cheers!

Your statements are very comforting. If I could make my living writing and coding I too would live with the wind and the birds. But I am here because I come from nothing and here I have made something. The little something I have made enables me to help my friends a little too. So I am here for that. Can I go else where and help more by making more? That is unknown to me at the moment. I have just written a poem inspired by a secession with my life coach, Routh Chadwick.

    Unknown Junkie

    Addicted to
    That rush
    Of adrenaline

    Caused by
    Proximity to
    A vast dark

    Chasm

    Known as

    The Unknown

    Whose impenetrable
    Darkness
    Craves
    A fix
    Of
    Penetration

    Whose soft black
    Velvet edge
    Sharp as a
    Spike, a needle, syringe

    Waits for me
    To press my
    Throat
    Against

    Will it cut?
    Will it wound?
    Will it be worth
    The effort to swoon

    Into her abyss?

    I need to find out.

Thank you, Derek, for making me think beyond myself, once again. I've long believed that where I am now is the sum of my life's choices and you just confirmed it for me! The new question is: have I made the choices or have the choices made me, or both? The answer, I feel, says a lot about who I am. Thanks, again.

I think you are on a search for something deeper than your physical location and "why" you're there. Sounds like you're beginning to reflect on past achievements, lives touched and experiences you've had. Nothing wrong with that of course. It's just that the reality is somewhat a circuitous logic in that the "why" is both the question AND the answer.

That photo is breathtaking. What a gorgeous place to be. What I appreciate from this post Derek, is the fact that you are asking the question in the first place. It's the best way I know how to step out of auto-pilot and tune into oneself. Other great questions are: Who am I? What do I want? How can I serve? Ask the questions-then live the answers.

To concentrate literally means to make small, condense, cut out the unnecessary. It follows that when trying to concentrate, it's imperative to eliminate distractions, expansiveness, surprises, and motion. The book "Thinking Fast and Slow" is a great book about how our mind works that way.
    Best wishes.

  383. Mary Catterton (2013-12-23) #

Derek, you were meant to write… I enjoy your articles very much. They always start me thinking. :-)

I ask myself, well in truth I try to remember to ask God; "Why am I here?" And then, I remember His promise found in the 29th chapter of Jeremiah… 11th verse. "For I know the plans I have for you" says the Lord, "Plans for your welfare and not for your harm - so you may have a future of hope."

God does not create anything on a whim, or because He is bored or restless being God. The Lord is purposeful, mindful, strategic, perfect. I was, therefore created for a specific reason - to accomplish things which are worthy of the gifts He has given me - including the whole of my very of life - and to bring glory and honor to His name.

It becomes a bit more complicated as we attempt to sort out the demands on ourselves, our time and our possessions. Some days are better than others. And some we wish to forget. We continue to trive - as every new day brings new opportunity to get it better than the day before.

Long day - too much rambling… but from the heart just the same.

    Mary

More awesome than words, Derek! Happy for you & Saj & your child.:)

Earth offers some 'rooms' (like say, the Austrian Alps) that are a breathtaking gift just to behold. Other 'rooms' (like Kauai) become part of your being after living there only a short time. Looks like you've found both in NZ.

Like Bryan above, I sent you a similar compliment years ago, after (perhaps the same?) TAXI music seminar, appreciating the presence you radiated. This Presence is the greatest gift - to yourself, your family & friends.

To live in a place & in such a way that at least once a day
you look up from your work stunned
at the beauty before you, around you, within you
    To let those moments multiply
    until the doing whatever
begins to merge with the being wherever
and the reasons why become so obvious they completely disappear
in the infinite, unconditional, everlasting, all-forgiving,
    pure divine love 24/7

In this enlightened state hidden 'rooms' reveal themselves
you realize that it's all One Place
your 'far away' family & friends (Milt) are really just 'in the other room'
One Place, one thing, one consciousness
    One Love

Your child will be forever grateful to grow up in such a time & place
the wonder of the mountains, sea, & sky
    the magic of the Shire
knowing for sure that miracles are supposed to happen - all the time!
    Joy is contagious.
    Thanks for sharing yours.:)
☺ Thanks Alana! I really appreciate it. — Derek

Thank you, Derek. Great question, along with "Who am I?," and "Why am I?" The "here" part depends on brain-body perception, which is where endless more questions may arise. Maybe the best answers to guide us are beyond this perception?

Hi Derek:-) Had to think on this one. Of course all of us have a reason, if we want to taste it. I think we are always discouvering why are we here???.. We are so small and yet when the winds of God wish to stir us we are beyond ourselves. My human effort is what it is, my choices. When I start to think it is my doing, I let it go...like a dandelion seed, as destiny is not mine to control. Willing too, is my responsibility. Impossibility becomes reality. BUT.. Mostly we are here to love:-)
Have a great New Year Derek and family!

Many congrats on your new move Derek and that picture is insane to the membrane, I love it! I know you'll create some incredible new ventures while your there and can't wait to see what you'll come up with next! I asked myself the same question "Why am I here?" around 6 months ago, then sold my home after 10 years, and moved to a better location for my current needs. I went from a 3 story home into a 600 sq foot apartment and hope to create more music, films, and graphic design work in 2014. Thank you for this awesome blog Derek and for sharing it with us. I wish you the best in 2014 in your new killer location!

Hello Derek. I enjoy your musings and comments.

We surround ourselves with things that make us comfortable and happy. As a result we no longer seek something else. But sometimes it takes a while for us to realize that we are stagnating and need to make a change of location and activity. Many of us do not have the means to make changes nor the courage to face the unknowns. But I am wondering why something comes into our life at the right moment that helps us to take that step.

After 30+ years living beside the ocean in Nova Scotia, my husband and I moved to Alberta to take advantage of better working opportunities. We could (and probably should have done this many years ago), but didn't until our son moved here and made it feasible. It was the right thing to do, and I wonder why we didn't do it before. Our life's journey continues ...

  398. Steve Petersen (2013-12-30) #

I've asked that question over and over. Sometimes I've stayed, sometimes I've moved on. However every time I've asked myself the question, "Why am I here?", I move forward with greater focus. Thank you for your inspiration Derek.
    Best of Success.

Looks like a pretty distracting place to me, but I guess one could get used to the beauty eventually : )!

The question also seems like a great work-around to get to "Who Am I?," which I can never seem to answer well or to my satisfaction. I'm defintely going to try this one, and look forward to learning from what I come up with.

The key seems to be 'solitude'. I'm wondering if solitude depends solely on location or also by an attitude of contentment regardless of location?
Definitely does not depend on location. It's just that some locations are more conducive to it. You can be in solitude in a little apartment in a big city (as I was for months), but because of the high cost of rent and more constricted/confined quality of life, it doesn't make sense to pay the high price to be in a big city if you just want to be alone. — Derek

    Derek,
Is that photo from Milford Sound? I traveled both islands after college in 2004 and visited Milford Sound. My wife and I are leading a group to tour NZ (including Milford Sound) Dec. 20, 2014 - Jan. 6. Maybe we'll bump into you. :)
    Peace,

Thanks for sharing this wonderfully simple way of re-evaluating life. I've never felt 100% bound to anywhere throughout my life and continually have to ask myself that question to move forward. It's so liberating when you do. It's crucial to evolve. Even now I find myself feeling guilty about not settling for too long in places. This has helped put a bit of peace to that. Thanks. Wish you all the best. x

I was adjusting my goal settings for these year and the same question was asked. Why am I here? So many different reasons, but yours truly inspire me. We can be in the middle of no where and still find a way to answer in many ways, no just what is needed to be heard or politically correct. Looks amazing.Have fun and enjoy!

    Good for you Derek!
I'm scared to ask that question "Why am I here?" to myself because if I ask it there's a good chance that the answer will be some place very far away from where I am now. And since I have a wife and two kids (and the rest of the family who want to see their grand children grow) my answer (a far away place) wouldn't be fair for them.
Right now I am more thinking that wherever I go, I will be there. So, in theory, I can be ok with myself wherever i am.
Am I making any sense here?

Anyway, just wanted to say that my two dreamed destinations since I was a teenager (I don't know if for living or just visiting) are Vancouver (Canada) and New Zealand.
So I'm glad Derek that at least you made it ;-)

Tell a black guy from Uganda while he is trying to get a 1$ to live his family or another one from India while he is pushing his cow for a few pennies or another in Afghanistan..in Iraq .. in Bangladesh...in the rest 5/6 of the world......tell them to ask themselves this question: Why am i here??? they will give u the answer u are looking for.. They gonna tell u, they are here so some other guys frm usa or uk or rich europe..can fulfill their silly dreams!!!
Yes mr Derek. Travelling around the world, seeing so much.. u shouldnt ask and post things like that. U should know by now that 5billion people suffer so the rest few millions can have a good life..buying their products... their sweat, their petrol in ridiculous prices..Wars colonies...bla bla... and you still wonder dear friend ...why are u there?? u have that luxury to still wonder...

When I ask myself "why am I here," I cannot come up with an answer. I've ruined all chances to change my life (in my opinion) and I have grown very weary. I have nothing left to offer as I have given my all. I have desperately prayed for God to take me ever since I was a child but, alas, I am still here. Why?

I've really wanted to move to New Zealand for a long time now. It looks like a really nice place to be. What is the process for finding work/moving to New Zealand on your own? (I am assuming that you are a US citizen.) I just came over to this blog from Tim Ferriss' website and I really like the posts I've read so far.
See New Zealand immigration website, which is very tranparent and helpful. Also the people who work there are really helpful, if you call. — Derek

My partner is a tech whiz like yourself and we have big plans to affect positive change, starting in Christchurch. Would love to connect with you!

I think you've made a good choice. There are a million reasons why WE (I and my wife) are here now. We're retired, so could be pretty much anywhere. Here is the most recent reason that occurred to me earlier today: the wonderful smell (!) of the New Zealand bush after a rain. Unlike anywhere else. That's reason 1,000,000. More space and I'd give you the previous 999,999.

  447. Miguel Lahunken (2017-03-30) #

    Why are we here?
I have to be somewhere sometime in a universe that has everything. There are two things in the universe: energy, and information; and, information is the conformation of energy. That conformation must be in differentiated closed circuitry, that there be something to move out of the way and fill in behind in the one substance, energy. Enough differentiation causes consciousness so that, in turn, the matrix of energy is thereby differentiated and therefore conscious.
It was found that in outer space there are automatic differentiations wherever there is enough nothingness, for, the infinitesimal point nothingness, . , is rastered by time into timespace, U , which exerts its oneness in one direction, /, stirring closed circuitry, O, that all going the same way, vO^XvO^, repels, X, forcing confluency, =, back into undifferentiation. "Of Him, through Him, and to Him are all things." - Romans 11:36.
The force of stirring, /, is different on either side of a circuit in this process due to the value of pi going from zero to higher values, and thereby there is a different amount of force on either side of the circuit thereby allowing the circuit to circulate.
The friction is caused by the Planck’s volumes. Nothing can be smaller than Planck’s volume. The infinitesimal point nothingness is absolute nothingness, nothing. As said “nothing” can be smaller than Planck’s volume.
This process is eternal, therefore, energy is eternally conscious, and has been called God.

    Hello Derek,

My name is Ashley Walters. I’m a story producer for the Vancouver-based podcast company, Pacific Content. We've just launched a new podcast, Trailblazers, hosted by best-selling author Walter Isaacson from Dell that's all about the recent disruptors and innovators who revolutionized industries and transformed lives.

Here's a couple of links to the show: https://tinyurl.com/trailblazerpodcast

    https://www.delltechnologies.com/en-us/perspectives/podcasts/trailblazers.htm

For an upcoming episode, we're exploring disruptions in the music industry. I’m writing because I'd like to see if you might be interesting in doing a short (30 min) phone interview for the podcast?

And to tell you a little more about our show... So far Trailblazers has released five episodes focusing on digital disruption in the entertainment, photography, fast food, video games and newspaper industry. We've also recently been featured on CBS This morning:

    http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/walter-isaacsons-trailblazers-podcast-explores-digital-disruptors

We're often looking to speak with insiders and innovators to give listeners a unique and varied perspective on disruption in different industries. Our guests have ranged from the inventor of the digital camera, Steve Sasson, to former Kodak VP Willy Shih and former Kodak executive Vince Barabba. We've also had Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari and creator of the game Pong on the show, as well as former Sega CEO, Tom Kalinske.

I look forward to hearing from you!

    Best,
    Ashley

    This didn't go too well.
Just told the wife "I'm taking a month vacation". (And this was before I came across this article.)
But like you, I have 4 or five projects 90 percent done. Just need to launch. Quit my job in March to "complete" stuff. got distracted and less monied.
So the "I'm going away for a month". request.

She said, "Um, no you're not".
So I said, "It's like going to rehab--you can't go for a week and expect to be better; you have to go all in, you know, stay a month."

Anyway--this article just helps me decide (or will cause my divorce...lol).

Do you think this is your final place?

Is it because of the similarity to California? (surfing, mountains!)

  453. Sean Crawford (2017-09-28) #

This metaphor can be expanded to relationships (For example, are we here for a quick good time or a long time?)
and also expanded to organizational meetings.

By meetings, I don't just mean always have a topic, or a motion on the floor, I mean why are you meeting? If a project is all wrapped up and running smoothly then it is OK for the group to disband, or become a once-a-year meeting.

As my college teacher told us,, "If a group does not know "why" it is doing, then it should STOP until it does."

    Derek,
I like how Ray at comment #444 caught the metaphor. Readers keep forgetting that your posts are not literal, but are intended to be applied to, say, music business, as a metaphor.

At #446 I like how you caught someone misusing the word "need." To expand on my teacher at #456, he would catch students asking him for "two seconds" to make an announcement to the class. He would stop them, rather than answer "yes," and ask them to think and be honest. "Two seconds" might really mean two minutes or more.

Sir Winston Churchill also believed in honesty in one's use of language.
