Apple TV+ has a big hit on its hands with Severance. The weird workplace drama tops Reelgood’s list of the most-streamed series of the week.
The show debuted in February and the fifth episode premiered Friday. The first four were enough to push the series to the top of the chart.
Severance becomes huge (mind-bending) hit for Apple TV+
The movie and TV search engine Reelgood ranks Severance as the top series on its list of the most popular titles on any streaming service during the week of March 2 to March 9. It’s been ranked for the last three weeks, but this is the first time the Apple TV+ show has made it to the top.
While Apple has the most popular series, the movie Free Guy from Disney+ and HBOMax is the most streamed title. These two are followed by The Dropout on Hulu, Euphoria on HBOMax and West Side Story on Disney+ and HBOMax.
Reelgood’s Top 10 ranking is based on streams and engagement on the platform among millions of users in the United States across all SVOD and AVOD services.
JustWatch, which runs a video recommendation service, put Severance at #4 on its most-watched list for the week of February 28 through March 6. Estimates from companies like it and Reelgood are necessary because streaming services don’t reveal how many people watch their offerings.
Check out this seriously trippy workplace sci-fi drama
In Severance, Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team of employees who’ve undergone a severance procedure that surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Scout finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself.
Ben Stiller serves as both executive producer and director of the Apple TV+ series. The creator and writer of Severance is Dan Erickson.
In addition to Scott, other stars in the show include Patricia Arquette and Oscar-winner Christopher Walken.
The series has a 97% approval score on the review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. The Cult of Mac review says the show “takes pointed satirical swipes at modern workplace culture, but ultimately offers a deeper look at the meaning of life.”
The first five episodes of Severance are available to watch from Apple TV+ now. The service comes with a $4.99-per-month subscription that also brings access to an array of other series and films, including thrillers, comedies, sci-fi, documentaries and more.
