Many of you access the nixCraft tutorial and blog post using the RSS feed. However, Google decided to kill the last part of Feedburner. Back in the old days, I and many others used FeedBurner. At some stage, Google acquired FeedBurner, and now they are putting it into maintenance mode. Hence, this new change will affect those getting daily emails via FeedBurner when new content is posted here. Therefore I urge you to update your feed.

New nixCraft RSS feed URLs

Old RSS/feed urls:
feeds.cyberciti.biz
feeds.cyberciti.biz/nixcraft-linuxfreebsdsolaristipstricks
feeds.feedburner.com/nixcraft-linuxfreebsdsolaristipstricks

New RSS/feed urls

From Google:

Starting in July, we are transitioning FeedBurner onto a more stable, modern infrastructure. This will keep the product up and running for all users, but it also means that we will be turning down most non-core feed management features, including email subscriptions, at that time.

The lesson is evident here, not to trust 3rd party with your RSS feed or content. I will never forgive Google for erasing Google Reader RSS/Atom feed aggregator. I lost many readers because of that move.

Why separate domain names for nixCraft RSS/ATOM?

nixCraft content is available using RSS format. The blog is hosted at www.cyberciti.biz, but an RSS feed is available from the www.cyberciti.com domain. Many of you consume nixCraft content via RSS/ATOM feed, creating load on the origin server. Not to mention Cloudflare web application firewall (WAF/CDN) aggressively blocks RSS/ATOM feed sometimes. Hence, RSS/ATOM feed is available from separate domains and servers with aggressive caching policy. I am tight on resources, plus it makes it easier to manage static and dynamic content.

I already placed HTTP/301 in place, but I cannot control feedburner.com or google.com hosted content. Therefore I request everyone to update their RSS feed URL.

RSS Feed readers

A quick Nginx log file shows the following popular RSS reader among Linux, macOS and Unix users:

  1. Akregator (KDE)
  2. Liferea (GNOME)
  3. Tiny Tiny RSS is a free and open source web-based news feed (RSS/Atom) reader and aggregator. Tiny Tiny RSS seems to be the most popular among FOSS users as it can be installed on a cloud server and supported by many home NAS devices too.
  4. Newsboat is an RSS/Atom feed reader for the text console. I am pleasantly surprised to see how many folks are using the Newsboat app.

Thank you for being a nixCraft reader for past 20+ years via RSS feed. I appreciate all your support, comments, and emails.
