国际空间站将于 2031 年 1 月脱离轨道，坠入南太平洋无人海域。NASA 计划将地点锁定在南太平洋无人居住海域一名为“尼莫点”（Point Nemo）的地方，那里是新西兰以东的一片开阔水域。受控脱离轨道是将退役空间站和卫星从近地轨道上移除的关键方法，大多数在穿过地球大气层时都会被烧毁，但也会有空间碎片坠落下来。太平洋的偏远海域有时被称为“航天器墓地”，这里经常是航天机构和航空航天公司有意让陈旧或报废的航天器脱离轨道的目的地。由于位置远离任何陆地，这些海域被认为是相对安全的空间碎片坠落之地。
