The world we live in is full of stereotypes and misconceptions. The modern lifestyle is very demanding and emphasizes people getting successful instead of getting happy. This puts a lot of pressure on us and does not allow us to enjoy life as much as we wish. Being rich suddenly is not enough and if there is something money cannot buy this is inner peace.

We have not been educated on how to make ourselves happy and we are also very far from the natural lifestyle that used to make us calm down and relax. The electronic devices, the traffic, the social isolation, and everything that has been going on is certainly not helping us. If there is one thing that is for sure is that in the near future psychological disorders will be the new trend and even today they are not at all uncommon.

Honestly, for a young doctor who is out there looking for the sector they want to turn their attention to, anything associated with the human soul will perhaps be the job of tomorrow. Today I focus on two common misconceptions that have proved to create problems for the people who suffer from these disorders.

Psychological disorders are not contagious
It is a common misbelief that psychological problems can be contagious. Of course, we do not live in the Middle Age and no one thinks they can work as a source of ”infection” like physical illnesses. If you catch the flu there is a high possibility someone who drinks from the same glass of water that you used a minute ago will also get sick, because viruses spread very easily. In psychological issues, no one is so naive as to believe that a similar mechanism takes place.

However, several publications that attempt to educate people on this kind of stuff and want to raise awareness finally manage to scare people and make them avoid people who suffer from depression, stress, etc. The idea is that the person who is depressed, for instance, will talk to you about the things that make them unhappy and ”pass” this mood to you as well. If someone is so sensitive to other people’s vibes maybe they indeed have to stay away from a depressed person. However, the majority of the population is not so sensitive. Besides, even if someone brings you down this does not mean you will get sick as well and you will suffer from depression.

The most probable scenario is that after a while you will forget about it and you will return to your original mood. Finally, remember that talking with people with these problems does not force you to listen to them. You can also, decide to lead the conversation and become the talker. This way instead of having them bring you down, it will go the other way round and you will eventually make them feel better. It can be a win-win situation, so there is no need to stigmatize these people.

People can recover
Another myth that accompanies mental and psychological disorders is that people will carry these problems forever. To start with, it is scientifically proven that it is relatively harder to have your soul get sick than your body. The body has the tendency to reflect issues we have deep inside in our souls and make us unhappy. It is the physical way to ”get rid” of the hard emotion. In other words, it is the materialistic view of this particular condition. So, yes we will try to express it on the body. On the other hand, this does not exclude the possibility that one will continue having it on their mind.

The process of getting sick is slower, so is the process of recovering. Still, everyone can recover from all psychological illnesses. It may take a while but eventually, they will make it. Imagine a world where people could not have hope. If we allow ourselves to believe that this situation is not reversible we sign our death penalty.

As in every case, it is important to understand that wherever is a problem there is a solution. It is also crucial for society to embrace this mindset when it comes to people with psychiatric and psychological issues because otherwise, the misconception will negatively affect many people with these issues and their families.
