Therefore replacing Groove Music on some devices

Microsoft has already announced a modern version of the famous media player, and now it looks like the company is ready for the next big step: make it the default app on Windows 11.

As spotted by onMSFT, Microsoft is now making the Media Player app the default music app on Windows 11 for select insiders. This means it’s replacing Groove Music, something that Microsoft itself has already announced and which totally makes sense in the long term.

Worth knowing is that the whole thing is happening in stages, so not only that an official announcement is not yet available but the change is also live only for a very limited number of insiders.

Most likely, Microsoft will make it official as part of the next Windows Insider preview build, and the new Media Player app could make its way to all production devices with the debut of the first major Windows 11 feature update due later this year.

The modern Windows Media Player

Microsoft announced the new Media Player in late 2021, explaining that all data from Groove Music will be migrated automatically to the new application.

“At the heart of Media Player is a full-featured music library that allows you to quickly browse and play music, as well as create and manage playlists. If your music collection is in Groove Music today, your library and playlists will automatically migrate to this new experience. The update to the new Media Player will replace the Groove Music app,” the company explained.

“If you use the legacy Windows Media Player today, it will continue to be available in Windows Tools.”

At this point, Microsoft hasn’t shared an ETA as to when the Media Player app could go live for all insiders as the default option, but further info should be shared as its development makes more progress.
