THE ROLE.

We are looking for a Research Engineer to work on creating the next generation of real-time tools for Foundry products. The role involves the development of exciting new Virtual Production workflows, which will empower on-set artists and help reduce pipeline friction. This role will mean working with our team to design and implement new virtual production tools while integrating critical technologies like Universal Scene Description (USD) to effectively bridge stages of production.

We are looking for candidates with a strong track record in real-time workflows, a desire to build real-world solutions for artists in the film and visual effects industries, and in-depth experience developing in C++. Applicants should demonstrate a strong understanding of the problem domain and a proven track record in delivering high-quality outcomes.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES.

  • Develop new or existing IP into useful, high-quality features fitting product requirements.
  • Contribute to the code base for image, video and geometry processing.
  • Support the specification of features, requirements and scheduling for software development work
  • Review and investigate state-of-the-art tools and academic work to define potential solutions to industry problems
  • Develop and review algorithmic solutions, create early prototypes as proof-of- concept and beta tools to gather feedback from clients
  • Create prototypes as proof-of-concept alphas for feedback from key clients, betas to gather wider feedback and deliver final tools in products.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in C++ software development with an industry focus
  • Experience with Python
  • Experience in cross-OS development across Linux and Windows.
  • Knowledge of modern programming practices (e.g. BDD, TDD, Code Review)
  • Developed, debugged, delivered, and deployed software to customers
  • An interest in the VFX and film industry with an appreciation and desire to work on cutting-edge creative software in the visual effects industry.
  • Post-Graduate Degree in Engineering / Computer Science (e.g. MSc, Ph.D. or equivalent experience)
  • Proven experience in creative problem solving, algorithmic design, and the ability to turn complex algorithms into software tools.

Nice to have/Keen to learn

  • Knowledge of virtual production practices
  • Strong 3D maths skills
  • Experience with a modern game engine
  • Solid understanding of graphics APIs
  • Knowledge of Pixar’s Universal Scene Description (USD)
  • Knowledge of Jenkins/Conan/CMake an advantage
  • Experience of leading using AGILE methodologies (Scrum, Kanban etc)
