Thanks @sama for hunting us! ❤️
Hi everyone, 👋
I’m Matt, one of the founders of Pilot.
When @kolarzowski and I started Pilot in 2017, we set out to create a more worldwide job market. Having had the opportunity to live in many countries throughout my life, I’ve seen first-hand how much your impact and opportunities in life depend on where you happen to be born or live. It always struck me as deeply unfair. Something we’ll look back on hundreds of years from now and think of as quaint at best, and discriminatory at worst.
In 2019, we launched our payroll, benefits and compliance platform—making hiring anywhere in the world as easy as a few clicks.
Fast-forward to today, we’re helping hundreds of companies hire employees and contractors in over 160 countries around the world, stay compliant, make sure that their employees are treated fairly, and have the same great experience getting paid regardless of where they live.
What does it mean in practice?
🌎 All of your employees and contractors, domestic and international, in one place. If you use a different platform for your W-2 payroll, you can easily connect it to Pilot.
📑 All legal and compliance taken care of. We automatically register you for taxes in different states across the U.S., we offer localized contractor agreements for other countries, or can act as the employer of record and take all liability to stay in line with local laws.
💴 Your team gets the best exchange rates and local payment options in the industry, including in traditionally difficult markets like Latin America. We’ve built Pilot from day 1 to work like regular payroll, meaning that if your pay date is Dec 15, you should have money in your account on Dec 15. Without having to juggle different wallets or initiate withdrawals.
🔎 You’ll always know what rules apply to your employees, what currency they’re getting paid in, and what documents we’re asking them to sign. We are strong believers in transparency (inside and outside of the company), and you should never be kept in the dark about your own team.
😍 We have an amazing team ready to support you all. Building any company is hard as it is, and building a remote one can be harder in many ways. We’re here to help. Our team is spread around the world, like many of you are, to make sure that we can always assist you and your team with any questions they may have.
I can’t wait to hear what you all think! We’ll be hanging out in the comments to answer any questions.
—Matt

I pay over 100 contractors in 35 countries every month and this would be impossible without Pilot. Compared with other payroll tools, the pricing is very reasonable and they've continued improving the UI over the past year as we've used it.
I look forward to more features like W2 hiring in the future, but this is a fantastic tool for hiring contractors and international employees!
@karllhughes Thank you for sharing your experience! It’s been a pleasure to support you and the whole team and thank you for all the feedback shared within the last year :)
P.S. We have some exciting features launching in Q1 that I hope you’ll like
We work with Pilot at AngelList Venture and use it to run payroll for contractors.
I’m excited about the partnership we have for AngelList Stack, where new companies will be automatically set up with Pilot so that they can hire internationally from day one.
Congratulations on the launch, @kolarzowski and @matid! I'm surprised Pilot has not been hunted on PH till now??!! 🤯
I have only positive things to say about the platform (it does what it is meant to, and it does it par excellence) and the Makers (who love their users and go extra-mile to learn about their use cases).
I was so pleased with their whole experience that I also referred them to some of the startups like Plum, here in India :)
Curious about just one thing: crypto pay-out, when? 😅
Rooting for your success!
Thanks @adityavsc! It’s never too late to launch on PH, and I’m happy we did it :)
Appreciate all the insights from you and the rest of your team that helped to improve the product.
We’re working on an interesting solution for people who’d like to receive their payments in crypto. It’s one of the things we plan to launch in the upcoming months
It's the most unprofessional payment service I have ever experienced in my life.
At the moment, I'm under investigation ("money laundering") from my bank because they failed to correctly specify the sender (my employer) in the SWIFT transaction.
Everyone makes mistakes, but they follow that up with terrible customer service. They didn't contact me or offer any help for weeks. Only after two weeks of constant stress and only after I reached them directly they apologize for the first time.
Moreover, this situation is still unresolved and yesterday they did try to "hide the problem under the rug" by initiating a recall on this transaction without consulting my bank or even asking me if I have enough money in my bank account.
That all happened, although I made everything possible on my side to prevent this situation in the first place. I knew that this transaction would involve a significant sum of money, so I expected it to be reviewed by my bank. So I took all the measures I could to prevent this situation. For example, I called their customer support twice before initiating first transaction and ask to double-check all the details.
Hi @ivan_goncharov! I’m very sorry about the experience you’ve had with Pilot. I was actually working personally with the team to get this resolved for you.
A recall was just one option that our team offered, because it would allow us to re-send the payment to you with the details that your bank wanted. We were also communicating with your employer directly to get this resolved for you ASAP. The intention was to immediately retry the payment with the correct details to make sure your bank has the right information on file. (In general, a recall would needed to have been approved by your and your bank anyway before funds get returned from your account).
Our team had also prepared a letter to your bank explaining the situation and clarifying that the transaction you are receiving is legitimate and is coming from the right employer. We’ll be sending that over within the next couple of minutes.
I’m reviewing all the communication you’ve had with our support team and will personally make sure this gets fixed for you. You can also contact me directly at [email protected]
> A recall was just one option that our team offered
Nobody offered me anything. Your team just stated that they would do that. Here is a direct quote from the email: "We instructed the provider to do that, and I'll update you as soon as the funds are returned."
> In general, a recall would needed to have been approved by your and your bank anyway before funds get returned from your account.
Your team never mentioned it to me, and they didn't even explain what "recall" actually means. And after that, nobody responded to my emails or chat messages for 16 very stressful hours.
Also, they don't even explain what payment they will cancel. And by the way, you sent 4 separate payments with incorrect details, and it's just the biggest one that triggered an investigation from my bank.
Moreover, it is not the first time your team making exactly the same mistake. My employer changed its company name in 2020, and your team still uses old name everywhere. For example, the first version of the "Consulting Agreement" you generated contained an invalid company name that was correct not by your team but by my employer. After that, I had two separate calls with your customer support, asking her to double-check all the details. And after that, you still managed to issue 4 individual transactions using the old name of my customer. In two weeks since this was uncovered by my bank, you didn't explain how it happened the second time.
@matid Since you replied on PH with way more details than your team did in more than two weeks of email communication, can you please explain here:
How does this situation happen? And since my employer still uses your service, how can I trust that you don't repeat the same mistake the third time?
