The live-action Halo TV show looks extremely expensive in its newest trailer

Halo will debut on Paramount Plus in 2022

After a short teaser last month, Paramount Plus has debuted the first full trailer for the upcoming live-action Halo TV series at the 2021 Game Awards, ahead of the show’s streaming debut in 2022.

Halo will star Pablo Schreiber (American Gods) as the armored super-solider, while Jen Taylor will reprise her role from the games as Master Chief’s AI companion, Cortana.

The trailer still doesn’t give too much of an idea of what to expect from the show, which Paramount says “will take place in the universe” as the Halo games and see humanity face off against the alien forces of the Covenant. But it’s still not clear whether Halo will be trying to adapt the games directly or tell its own story within the world of the franchise. The trailer itself mostly focuses on a few quick shots of Halo’s cast, including Natascha McElhone as Dr. Catherine Halsey, the creator of both Cortana and the Spartan super-solider program.

Halo was first announced back in 2018, and original set to air on Showtime. But after production was delayed following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the series was shifted to become a streaming exclusive on the recently relaunched Paramount Plus streaming service, where the popular franchise could help draw in new subscribers.

Halo is set to debut on Paramount Plus in 2022, although there’s still no precise release date.

The live-action Halo TV show looks extremely expensive in its newest trailer

Really? I thought the opposite. Thought it looked a little cheap/low budget.

I feel like Halo deserves one of the top companies like Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon etc… to spend millions and do it right.

The material is there, the universe is there, characters etc… we just need some skilled, reputable company to bring it to life.

I would have been exstatic had Neill Blomkamp been begged back to do it.

"Basically, the politics between Fox and Universal crashed the movie," Blomkamp later told AV Club. "Fox wanted more control of the film, I think, and Universal was in the driver’s seat. And they were just going at one another, and finally the whole thing fractured."

Indeed, the project fractured to such a degree that Blomkamp ruled out returning to Halo at a later date – and, in more explicit terms, vowed not to work with 20th Century Fox again. "They treated me like shit," Blomkamp told Wired. "They were just a crappy studio. I’ll never ever work with Fox ever again because of what happened to Halo – unless they pay me some ungodly amount of money and I have absolute fucking control."

I think Halo is best when it’s grungy and dirty. After Halo 3 the games got too shiny for my liking, and not the Firefly kind if shiny either. Still, I have high hopes that the powers that be get out of the way and let the creative team do their thing.

The Den of Geek article is a good read.

Yea, I liked Blomkamp’s vision for Halo as well!

Wish we could’ve seen it come to life… SMH

Wtf. Most TV shows consist of an actor, apartment size set, and a camera. They’re cheap to make. The sets here on the other hand look absolutely massive.

Game of thrones was an expensive show, and even they had to limit the larger sets and CGI scenes for specific episodes. This shit is expensive af, not something your average show has.

There is a difference between being expensive an looking expensive. There is also a difference in overall cost depending on where you shoot and which production and post-production houses you work with. Depending on where you shoot, and with whom, you can get the same or similar aesthetics for more or less cost to the production. And I don’t mean by skirting production unions, I just mean due to things like local currency, local standard wages and rates for work, etc. But undoubtedly a show like this is costly to make regardless of where it is made.

But, that’s all the practical element. Aesthetically any expensive show can look "cheap" if you get the right (wrong) combination of lighting, production design, makeup, etc. Even if you spend a lot of money your end product can be aesthetically disappointing. I personally cannot pass judgment on this show based on the trailer, but I do think some of the shots in the trailer had a look that would make them at home on Sy-Fy. A lot of either flat lighting in some shots, or high-contrast high-saturation shots designed to compensate for the limitations of the equipment being shot with. But again, this is just a trailer and may not represent the final product at all. I’m willing to wait and see but don’t blame anyone who assumes the show’s sheen lacks a bit of luster.

My sentiments indeed… appreciate you typing all that out.

I don’t want to judge an entire show based on a trailer but I also got "SyFy" channel vibes aka "low budget" quality vibes from this trailer.

Also, like you mentioned, plenty of big budget movies (and shows) in the past that were lackluster due to their choice of personnel and their execution of the content, storyline, characters etc…

Was it, what? Netflix, Amazon & HBO Max are merely delivery platforms….Paramount can literally hire the same people to create these projects. It’s not like these streaming platforms work solely with "in-house" teams. They’re not exactly poor either.

Personally, I feel the visuals look great.

What do you mean? It looks so cheap!

Yeah, a lot of those scenes look like a video game. Not entirely horrible, but they don’t really stand up to some of the best work out there.

I’ll buy that for a dollar!

There’s definitely could be a great halo movie/show, but I’m not at all sure this is going to be it. Especially given how much fans love the actors involved in the actual games. Hearing anyone else play Cortana/Halsey/Chief is going to feel awkward as hell to those who care. Those who don’t probably won’t watch anyway.

I loved Halo Forward Unto Dawn and could never get into Halo Nightfall. I hope this is good. I honestly think the biggest thing that the series has to overcome is the movement of Master Chief (and other Spartans). In real life it can be hard to reproduce what looks so fluid in the games.

Wouldnt this be better as an animated series?

I think we have too much entertainment now. Anything is transformed into TV shows and movies.
