This fun feature in Google Arts & Culture helps you find lookalikes for your pets in some of history's greatest pieces of art.

There's no greater joy than sharing pictures of your pet with others. If your friends and family have gotten tired of your continuous barrage of pet pics, then it's time to try out the Pet Portrait feature in Google’s Arts & Culture app. It helps you find pictures of your pet across time and fire a new wave of pet pictures.

What Is Google Arts & Culture?

Google Arts & Culture is a partnership between the Google Cultural Institute and over 2000 museums to feature historical and artistic content from galleries and museums worldwide. In 2018, Google released an app for it, which became immensely popular for its Art Selfie mode, a feature that allows people to find doppelgangers of themselves in famous art pieces.

Google Arts & Culture offers lots of great features to explore—it is a marvelous innovation. In November 2021, Google decided to extend this feature to animals, introducing Pet Portraits. You can now see doppelgangers of your pets across time in famous paintings.

How Does It Work?

The app uses a machine-learning algorithm that uses your submitted pet picture as a reference against countless art pieces in its library until it finds the closest one resembling it. From Japanese hanging scrolls to renaissance paintings, you would be surprised where your pet will pop up from. It's time to show your pets their ancestors.

How to Use Pet Portraits

To use it, first, download the Google Arts & Culture app. It's free to download and use.

  1. Launch the app and select the Camera button. You will now see a variety of features—scroll until you find Pet Portraits.
  2. Now add a picture of your pet. You can either take a photo or use a saved image.
  3. Depending on your photo, the time the app will take can vary from a few seconds to minutes. When it's done, you will see multiple results with a similarity percentage.

Share with your friends or why not see what some famous memes and reaction images look like in an art form.

Innovation Through Our Pets

Creativity plays a vital role in what technology can do. Art can seem uninteresting to some, but Pet Portraits allows it to be seen in a new light for them. This feature is a great example of what we can accomplish through innovation.
