Abstract

An example of medical software is backend software for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes based on telemetry data of pacemakers. Such software products can provably reduce the mortality rate of patients, but also endanger the patient’s health in case of malfunctions. Thus, the required quality level is very high and (inter)national regulations covering, e.g., the development and documentation have to be met. Although agile methods seem to be incompatible at first sight, they are also beneficial in this context. In this talk, I will summarize challenges of applying agile methods to the development of medical software and present processes to ensure conformance to regulations.

Speaker

Dr. Thomas Göthel has been working at BIOTRONIK since 2019. He is responsible for (subsystem) test engineering and test management in several development projects for medical software. He has profound experience in the practical application of test processes, covering requirements analysis, conceptual design of tests, implementation and automation of tests, and creating test summary reports. Additionally, he is responsible for improving test strategies and test processes.

Dr. Thomas received his diploma, doctorate, and habilitation in computer science at TU Berlin in 2007, 2012 and 2021, respectively. In his research, he has contributed to rigorous constructive and analytical quality assurance techniques for intelligent embedded systems.
