Need a Virtual Business Card? Create Your Own vCard for Free on Your Mac
Published 46 minutes ago
Physical business cards are a relic. Instead, you can create and share a virtual business card from the Contacts app on your Mac.
While business cards may have become obsolete in the current technological age, people still share their contact information digitally. Especially in professional settings, people still share and exchange their contact information in the form of vCards, also called virtual, electronic, or digital business cards.
While many free and paid apps are available to help you make your own vCard, you can make your own using the Mail app on your Mac.
What Is a vCard?
A vCard is the virtual counterpart to traditional business cards. It can contain personal or business details like your name, picture, address, date of birth, phone number, email address, website, and more.
vCards are sent as VTF files, a file format that’s supported by almost all devices. They can quickly be sent and received through email, Bluetooth, iMessage, and other modes, making them are an excellent option for sharing your personal or business details.
How to Make a vCard on Your Mac
The Contacts app automatically sets up a vCard for you when you set up your Mac. However, you can always modify and add information to your card as necessary. To view it:
- Open Contacts.
- From the menu bar, choose Card > Go to My Card.
- Alternatively, search for your name in the contacts list; this will be indicated with a Me icon beside your name.
This vCard is added as an attachment to emails. However, if you regularly use emails, you can opt for email signatures instead of vCard. Creating an email signature in Mail on your Mac is easy.

How to Modify Your Mac’s vCard
You have the option to add information or make changes to your vCard or select a different card as your card. If you want to make changes to your vCard from your Mac:
- Go to Contacts, then choose your card.
- Click Edit at the bottom.
- Click on the content you want to edit, then type on the field where you want to add information or modify.
- Click the Add (+) button to add more fields to your card. Hover the pointer to More Fields to reveal other fields you might want to add to your card.
- If you want to change your picture, just click the picture, and choose the image you want to replace it with.
- Click Done when you’re finished to save your changes.
To choose a different card as your default card, select a card, then click Card > Make This My Card from the menu bar.
Export Your vCard From Your Mac
vCards are exported primarily through Mail on Mac. Simply drag the vCard to your email message to send it to a recipient. However, you can also export vCards through other means by clicking the Share button in the Contacts app.
You can also limit the information you include with your contact card by going to Contacts > Preferences, clicking the vCard tab, then ticking one or more of these options:
- Enable private me card: Use this if you want to select specific information on your vCard that you want to export.
- Export notes in vCards: Toggle this if you want to send the notes along the vCard.
- Export photos in vCards: Select this if you want to include your contact’s photo when sending their vCard.
If you made your card private, select the information you want to include when you share your vCard by going to your card, clicking Edit, then ticking the checkboxes found on the right edge.
Personalize Your vCard on the Fly
vCards are handy files that enable quick sharing of contact details. However, unlike traditional business cards, vCards on Mac are customizable, allowing you to choose which details you want to include whenever you share or export them.
