Tesla sets up R&D and data center in Shanghai

The American automaker announced that its first R&D center outside the US has been established in Shanghai, as well as a data center for its Shanghai gigafactory.

The two centers will be put into operation in the near future. The R&D center will be responsible for engineering teams of software, hardware, electronics, materials, power and energy, the company said.

Tom Zhu, president of Tesla China, said Tesla has been practicing its commitment to deeply cultivating the Chinese market, adding that the R&D center will further promote Tesla's localization process in China, according to Xinhua News Agency.

The construction was in accordance with the requirements of Shanghai Data Center Construction Guidelines (2021 edition), the company said.

Context:

The plan of the R&D center and data center was put forward in early 2020. 

The Shanghai gigafactory is known to be Tesla’s primary vehicle export hub. In the second quarter letter this year, Tesla stated the Shangai gigafactory as one of their biggest assets. Additionally, the company’s potential growth in the local areas is huge.

The Shanghai gigafactory hosts the final assembly of the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y. The company sold 56,006 China-made vehicles in September, the highest since it started production in Shanghai about two years ago, data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed this month.

In the meantime, Chinese EV makers Nio and Xpeng delivered over 10,000 vehicles each last month. Volkswagen AG said it sold 10,126 ID. series EVs in China in September.
