Heuristic evaluation
User experience design learning series
Heuristic evaluation is looking at the mirror. It is about digital product self-improvement. Heuristic evaluation is competition with self.
It is part of the research and discovery step in the UX process:
UX process: Research & discover > Design > Test > Deliver
Heuristic evaluation helps us to:
- Reveal the usability issues in the digital experience
- Identify problems and potential opportunities
How to conduct a heuristic evaluation?
We need to find the answer to these questions:
- Is the user experience intuitive? Is it based on mental models and easy to learn?
- How is the navigation experience? How easy is it to get around?
- Are Interactions efficient and simple? Are there unnecessary steps? Can we accomplish the tasks quickly?
- Is the system Consistent? Consistency should exist everywhere: UI, Messages, Interactions,…
- Does the system provide clear feedback whenever needed?
- How are the Error handling and Error prevention systems: Can the system guess probable errors and prevent them? Is there any effective error handling?
- Do we provide support for the user?
- Design How does the design affect the experience? Does it help the user to accomplish their goals easily and effectively?
The report that answers all these questions, is the heuristic evaluation report and is part of the strategic UX project report in the discovery and research step.
