WHITE PAPER: The seven deadly sins of technology modernisation

By CPT Global

Who would have thought the seven deadly sins – pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, anger and sloth – were relevant to technology modernisation? CPT's new white paper explains how.

Mainframe modernisation may be pursued with good intentions, but IT departments can be tempted down dark and winding paths that lead to steeper costs, poorer performance, and projects that rival Dante’s Inferno.

Pride can blind mainframe teams to the power of distributed platforms, but it's important to know when it’s necessary to draw on the strengths of other technologies.

Greed can see an over-broad vision being pushed by boards and senior executives, but without planning there can be a disconnect between the vision and what IT teams can realistically achieve.

Lust for the latest 'toys' is perhaps understandable, but the implementation of any new technology comes with risks.

Envy can lead organisations to imitate a peer or a startup, but the pain of getting off a mainframe can exceed the possible benefits.

Gluttony can be seen when inadequately optimised applications burn CPU cycles, or where multi-year capacity deals are based on over-generous estimates of demand.

When money is spent but goals remain unfulfilled, anger comes easily. But 74% percent of businesses have started a legacy modernisation project and then failed to complete it. So set clear objectives, implement in phases, focus on value, and be suspicious of very large projects.

Sloth – avoiding innovation in favour of merely 'keeping the lights on' – results in the remaining mainframe workloads becoming more expensive to run, and fails to take advantage of the mainframe's strengths as part of a modern environment.

In our experience, organisations and IT teams commit these 7 deadly sins when they lose focus on what matters or try to do too much too soon. But with the right strategic approach, moderniza- tion can – and should – be effective and fulfilling as the IT pieces come together. Sometimes all it takes is clear thinking and realistic goal-setting – plus a little unbiased advice – to keep you away from temptation.
