China launches crewed spaceship Shenzhou-13 for space station construction

October 16, 2021 4:35 am

On Saturday, Beijing time, China launched the crewed spaceship Shenzhou-13, sending three astronauts to its space station core module Tianhe for a six-month mission, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Details:

The spaceship, atop a Long March-2F carrier rocket, was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China's Gobi Desert, according to the China Manned Space Agency.

After entering orbit, the Shenzhou-13 spaceship will dock with the in-orbit combination composed of the space station core module Tianhe and the cargo crafts Tianzhou-2 and Tianzhou-3.

The three astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu are expected to live and work in China's space station for a record-long six months, exceeding the three months maintained by the Shenzhou-12 crew from June to September this year. Wang will perform the mission as the first female astronaut to enter the China's space station.

Context:

The Shenzhou-13 manned spaceflight mission is the second of its kind in the Chinese space station's building period, following Shenzhou-12.

Citing military expert and space observer Song Zhongping, Global Times reported that the Shenzhou-13's launch suggests that China's space station and manned space technologies have completed the testing and verification phase, and entered the application phase.
