太阳系如何死亡？在太阳生命的末期，它会先变成红巨星，其表面将会膨胀到地球现在的轨道，在此过程中吞噬金星和水星，但地球是否能幸存下来未知。太阳在最后会变成白矮星。木星及其卫星被普遍认为能幸存。现在，天文学家报告利用夏威夷 Keck 天文台发现了已知第一颗在恒星死亡中幸存的行星。论文发表在《自然》期刊上。这颗行星与白矮星的距离只有木星到太阳距离的一半，这意味着木星以及火星都有可能幸存。但有多少生命会在此过程中存活？白矮星能在几十亿年内为靠的非常近（距离大约为金星到太阳距离的十分之一）的天体提供热量，但之后将没有足够的辐射支持任何东西。
