How one Developer learned to code with her disability

Rosita R., Front-End Developer, Brummen, Netherlands

Rosita originally shared her story on our blog in January 2021. We caught up with her to see how she’s progressed since then.

What inspired you to learn to code?

I started my WordPress blog a few years ago. Back then, you had to know some code. I didn’t want to install a plugin just to add an attribute to a link.

I always needed help if something had to be fixed, and I wanted to do it myself. Someone suggested that I should learn HTML and CSS, so I did, and I started at Codecademy in 2017.

In March 2020, I really wanted to become a Developer, so I had to really learn. Because of COVID-19, everything was closed, so I paid for Codecademy Pro. I feel like it’s a much better way to learn because you have Career Paths and Skill Paths you can follow.

I always needed help if something had to be fixed, and I wanted to do it myself.

How has coding impacted your life?

Previously, I was a stay-at-home mom. Except for raising my son, I didn’t have a goal in my life. Now, I am a Front-End Developer and participating in society.

Describe your dream project.

Something with accessibility. Everyone should be able to use the internet.

I would really like to see accessibility become normal for all developers so that all websites and software will be accessible to all.

Any advice for those who are new to coding?

Just start to learn, and learn at your own pace. Don’t compare yourself to others, and take your time.

When you’re not coding, what do you do for fun?

I love to cook, watch Netflix, and play The Sims 4.
