Looking forward with a school newsletter template
While some states celebrate Columbus Day on the second Monday in October, many have switched to a commemoration of Indigenous Peoples, honoring those who inhabited the land long before any European “discovery.”
Whichever version your school celebrates, looking forward, it’s a good opportunity to learn about the ancient tribes who were early inhabitants of the continent and whose ancestors walk among us still. This school newsletter template offers resources for doing just that.
Uplift Education this October 2021
The template kicks off with an article that explains the history of the commemorative day, and chronicles the shift in approach. The next section of the template offers up two posts with classroom resources and activities related to Indigenous Peoples’ Day, one from the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC.
The final section of the template focuses on land acknowledgments. What a land acknowledgment is for, how to find out which tribe used to inhabit the area you live in now, and how to write one. Teaching students of all ages about writing and offering up a land acknowledgment builds their communication skills, as well as their sense of moral responsibility and understanding of the complexity of historical narrative. Join us to uplift education.
Happy teaching!
