You've probably heard people talk about Clubhouse now that it is no longer an exclusive, invite-only app. You may even have tried it out and found that the interface can be a bit frustrating to understand at first.

Most of us are new to Clubhouse, so navigating the app can get confusing at times as it isn't a typical social media app. Maybe you've finally cracked how to find Rooms that appeal to you, and are inspired to try your hand at creating a Room of your own, but aren't sure how to go about it.

There are two methods of creating a Room on Clubhouse—you can either schedule a Room or create a spontaneous one.

Scheduling a Room allows you to plan ahead and gives your attendees a heads up so they can make time to join your discussion. Here's how to schedule a discussion on Clubhouse:

  1. Launch the Clubhouse app and tap the calendar icon at the top of the screen.
  2. On the next screen, tap the calendar icon with a plus sign on it in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Now populate the fields on the event page with information about your event, starting with your event name. This should be clear and to the point, so your audience knows what topics you will cover in your discussion.
  4. Next, you have the option of adding a Co-host, who will be able to cancel, edit, and remove people from the event—so ensure you assign a co-host who understands what you are trying to achieve with your event.
  5. Now move on to adding the date of your event. You can schedule an event on the same day.
  6. After that, add the time of the event. While you can schedule an event on the same day you wish to host it, be mindful of giving your invitees enough time to prepare for it, so you can have a substantial audience.
  7. If you belong to a club, you have the option of assigning the club as well.
  8. The final step is to add a description of your event. Clubhouse gives you 200 characters to describe your event so you can get really detailed. Ensure your description is clear and concise, so attendees know exactly what they're signing up for. This can even help those wanting to engage in your discussion to prepare themselves in advance.

It is always best to populate as much of this page as possible to make it easier for the people you will invite, or users who will come across your scheduled event, to make a decision to join your Room.

When you’re done filling out your event details, tap Publish in the top-right corner of the screen. Your scheduled event will then show up at the bottom of the screen. Tap the Share button if you want to share this event with other people so they can join your Room or share it with their own network. You can also Tweet it, copy the link, or add it to your calendar from here.

After you schedule your event, you can edit it at any time or delete it if you change your mind about hosting it. To find your event, simply tap the calendar icon at the top of the screen, and then tap the Upcoming for You menu. Choose My Events from the pop-up menu to see all of the events you’ve scheduled. You can choose what action to take from here.

When you’re ready to start your event, launch Clubhouse a few minutes before the event and tap Start a Room. You’ll then see your scheduled event listed. Tap Start your scheduled event to start your discussion.

How to Create a Spontaneous Room on Clubhouse

Spontaneous Rooms are a quick way to start a Room on the spot, and Clubhouse makes this easy. There are three types of spontaneous rooms that you can create on Clubhouse: Open, Social, and Closed Rooms.

The difference is who can join each Room. Any Clubhouse user can join an Open Room. Social Rooms are only accessible to people you follow, and Closed rooms are limited to users you’ve invited to the Room. After deciding which Room is suitable for your particular discussion, follow the steps to create the Room:

  1. Launch the Clubhouse app on your phone.
  2. Tap the Start a Room button at the bottom of the app’s main screen.
  3. Select the type of Room you want to start.
  4. Tap Add a Topic in the top-right corner and type in the title of your discussion.
  5. Now tap Let's go at the bottom of the screen, and you're good to go.

Once that's done, wait for other users to join, and then start the discussion. Alternatively, you can spread the word by inviting others to join your Room on Clubhouse.

If you want to prompt your friends to join your discussion, you can Ping them into your Room. Note that the Ping feature allows you to invite friends who are already Clubhouse users to join your discussion. If you invite someone who is not a Clubhouse user, they'll have to download the app first.

If your discussion is around a topic your invitees are interested in, they're more likely to join your discussion, even if it isn't scheduled. Here's how to invite friends to join your Room:

  1. Select your Room from the Hallway.
  2. Once inside the Room, tap on the add (+) button in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  3. Now choose the method you want to use to share this Room with your friend. Tap the Share button to send the link to their contact, the Tweet button to share the link with your Twitter followers, or select Copy Link to paste it in the text field of your chat with a friend—whether via SMS, WhatsApp, or any social media app with a messaging function.

Start Meaningful Conversations on Clubhouse

Social media apps are infamous for promoting a culture of fakeness and content that lacks substance. Clubhouse is different in that it is one of the few social media apps that give users a platform to have meaningful conversations.

Because Clubhouse attracts like-minded people, it is easier to find "tribes"—communities within your niche—which leads to more authentic and productive conversations in Clubhouse Rooms. If you want to have meaningful experiences and conversations with friends online, Clubhouse is the app to do that.
