iOS 15 will allow you to view photo metadata. But how can you make the most of this feature?

The Photos app on the iPhone and iPad has a much-needed feature with the new iOS 15 software update. It can now display the image metadata or EXIF data for photos shot and stored on your device. Until now, users had to rely on third-party apps to view this data.

EXIF data is a familiar term among photographers as they use them to get more information on a particular shot. If you're someone who needs these finer image details, we'll guide you on how to view the image metadata on an iPhone running iOS 15.

What Is Image Metadata?

Image metadata, also known as EXIF data, is simply the information stored by your camera when shooting a picture. This information typically includes the camera used, lens type, focal length, shutter speed, image resolution, file size, and location. The metadata is embedded into the image file, but you cannot view it normally.

Before iOS 15, you needed a program that let you view this information—such as Adobe Lightroom or FastStone Image Viewer.

Using the Photos app is now, without a doubt, the fastest way to view an image's metadata on your iPhone. Just follow these simple instructions:

  1. Launch the Photos app and open the photo you want to view the metadata for.
  2. Tap once on the image to view the Photos app's options.
  3. Now, swipe up on the photo. You'll find the EXIF data on the bottom half of your screen.
  4. Besides viewing, you can make some minor changes to the metadata too. You can tap on Adjust if you want to change the recorded date, time, and location for that picture.

Apple couldn't have made this process easier. Hiding the metadata in the caption menu makes it convenient to view all the information you need with a simple swipe.

The Photos App Gets the Improvements It Needed With iOS 15

The richer info pane is just one of the features the iOS 15 Photos app brings to the table. Apple also introduced a new Shared with You section that categorizes images and videos you've received from your iMessage contacts. Moreover, the existing Memories feature now includes support for Apple Music to give you access to millions of songs on the platform. All in all, we're glad that you can do a lot more with the Photos app in iOS 15.
