Help Wanted! Why doesn’t anyone want to work shitty jobs anymore?

It’s ‘just get a better job’ until people actually go get a better job.

More than 11 million people quit their jobs in April, May and June, according to Inc.com. Businesses are screaming “lazy” all over the place as a result. But for years those same business owners, when confronted with complaints about working conditions and low pay, said “if you don’t like it, go find a better job!”

Inc.com’s article, “The Biggest Truth Most Leaders Misunderstand About ‘the Great Resignation’” explains how workers are burnt out, and are finally taking the advice they’ve been getting for years from stubborn business owners.

The Help Wanted Crisis

You asked for it. You ‘savvy’ business owners who have been squeezing the life out of your employees for decades, while simultaneously telling them if they don’t like it — go find a better job! They’ve been listening. And now they’re gone because of bad managers, business practices that are bad for employees, and all manner of overworking and underpaying situations.

This has resulted in millions of businesses crying about not being able to find applicants. The Help Wanted signs are everywhere proving that millions are no longer begging for the shitty wage jobs that most businesses used to offer. Now those job applicants are demanding more. A lot more!

Very few business owners are saying “if you don’t like it go find a better job” these days. Wages for jobs have sharply increased across the country. All of a sudden, employers are increasing employee benefits, offering hiring bonuses, and adding all manner of perks for new hires. Just a couple years ago many of those same employers complained about not being able to offer any increases in pay or benefits. But now they’ve changed their tune. Miraculous!

It’s ‘just get a better job’ until your favorite fast food place closed at 7pm because ‘no one wants to work there’.

Corporate Karens & Kens

There’s no better place to witness the whining than in the media. Corporate interests are crying that nobody wants to work and that people are just lazy. The rightwing media and politicians are blaming unemployment benefits for their inability to attract job applicants. Yet employees unanimously agree that if those businesses would only pay better they’d be applying today.

It’s ‘just get a better job’ until the line at the grocery store is 20 minutes long because cashiers went out and found better remote work opportunities.

Apparently companies have been profit-taking for so long, and instead of investing in employees, they took luxurious vacations, padded their wallets, bought second homes, and purchased expensive boats. Many small business owners work very hard and deserve vacations and to live a good life, but that shouldn’t come as a result of ignoring the plight of their employees.

It’s ‘just get a better job’ until people actually go get a better job. Then it suddenly becomes ‘why are people so lazy? Why doesn’t anyone work shitty jobs anymore?

Employers are Rejecting Millions of Qualified Workers, New Harvard Research Finds

Inc.com’s article, “In the Middle of the Great Resignation, Employers Are Rejecting Millions of Qualified Workers, New Harvard Research Finds” explains how problematic hiring software and bad job descriptions are mostly to blame for the lack of applicants nationwide.

For some time now employers have been complaining about a significant lack of applicants. This Harvard study describes one of the the biggest problems. And even employers who greet walk-in job seekers tell them, “this is a fast-paced, hard work environment, with uncertain hours and low pay”. Leaving would-be employees to say, “Um, no. No thanks. I want to feel the employer is invested in my future. If you want me to work hard, you’ll need to pay much better.”

You get what you pay for.

Most employers are used to demand that employees are always working hard, sweating, busy-bodies that are constantly hustling with and endless supply of energy and a bright smile until they get sent home early because there are not enough customers that moment. Truth is that employees output what they think the employer is paying for. If the job pays shitty, the employer doesn’t deserve a top notch employee.

Greed-based capitalism has brainwashed employers into thinking cutting labor hours, cutting back on benefits, keeping employee costs minimal is key regardless how that might negatively effect the employee’s life.

It’s just business they say. Well, if you think that, then you asked for the Help Wanted crisis of 2021! You asked for the #GreatResignation movement — and it’s your fault.

The Great Resignation Movement” By Mindy Morgan Avitia:

How to Attract and Keep Employees 101

  1. Pay better than competitive wages that exceed the cost of living
  2. Offer better than competitive benefits
  3. Provided consistent full-time hours
  4. Listen to your employees and inquire about how they are doing
  5. Offer advanced training and opportunities for advancement
  6. Stop telling people if they don’t like it go somewhere else
  7. Don’t be a shitty employer
