Twitter is a popular social network where users share messages called tweets. Twitter allows us to mine the data of any user using Twitter API or Tweepy. The data will be tweets extracted from the user. The first thing to do is get the consumer key, consumer secret, access key and access secret from twitter developer available easily for each user. These keys will help the API for authentication.

API.add_list_member()

The add_list_member() method of the API class in Tweepy module is used to add a member to a specified list.

Syntax : API.add_list_member(parameters)

Parameters :

  • list_id : ID of the list.
  • slug : slug of the list.
  • user_id : ID of the user to be added to the list.
  • screen_name : screen name of the user to be added to the list.
  • owner_id : ID of the owner of the list.
  • owner_screen_name : screen name of the owner of the list.

Returns : an object of class List

Example 1 :

# import the module
import tweepy
# assign the values accordingly
consumer_key = ""
consumer_secret = ""
access_token = ""
access_token_secret = ""
# authorization of consumer key and consumer secret
auth = tweepy.OAuthHandler(consumer_key, consumer_secret)
# set access to user's access key and access secret 
auth.set_access_token(access_token, access_token_secret)
# calling the api 
api = tweepy.API(auth)
# the ID of the list
list_id = 
# screen name of the user to be added
screen_name = "geeksforgeeks"
print("Number of members before add_list_member() is used : " +
str(api.get_list(list_id = list_id).member_count))
# adding the user to the list
api.add_list_member(list_id = list_id, screen_name = screen_name)
print("Number of members after add_list_member() is used : " +
str(api.get_list(list_id = list_id).member_count))

Output :

Number of members after add_list_member() is used : 0
Number of members after add_list_member() is used : 1

Example 2 : Adding multiple users to a list.

# the ID of the non-existent list
list_id = 
# add the following users to the list
users = ["geeksforgeeks", "PracticeGfG",
"GeeksQuiz", "hackerrank"]
print("Number of members before add_list_member() is used : " +
str(api.get_list(list_id = list_id).member_count))
# adding the users to the list
for screen_name in users:
api.add_list_member(list_id = list_id, screen_name = screen_name)
print("Number of members after add_list_member() is used : " +
str(api.get_list(list_id = list_id).member_count))

Output :

Number of members before add_list_member() is used : 0
Number of members after add_list_member() is used : 4
