How to have fun at work
I am having a great time working at grofers right now.
This wasn’t always the case.
I hope some of my insights can help you enjoy your work more; just the way it helped me.
Act like you own everything
I used to box myself in artificial boundaries and specialisations like product, app features, consumer metrics, research. As a result, I often felt stuck since most problems that mattered were not restricted in these boxes.
The mental shift to own the progress of the company helped me unblock myself and do whatever is needed to get wins fast. I have stopped feeling stuck on people in the name of respecting their expertise/domain and have started going deep into all facets to understand problems and help wherever needed. This makes me feel empowered and in control rather than stuck and helpless. Not-stuck is fun.
Solve problems today
There is too much time in the day if I truly commit to acting. All it takes is getting habitual of choosing movement over inertia. Problems often get solved by thought clarity and action, not by planning meticulously for days. Getting wins every day is fun.
Insist on written clarity over meetings
My calendar used to be packed with meetings. I used to think of it as the only way to work. It made most of my days boring and non-productive, everything took longer.
But the moment we started insisting on broadcasting clarity in written or visual form, most of these painful meetings went away and alignment became a much smaller problem. My calendar is now free to solve problems and build and share clarity with others in the same way. Solving problems every day is fun.
Take bets without fear
The future is unknown. Forward motion comes from running on a path with conviction, right or wrong. That wrong path reveals our mistake and hence eventually the right path. Conviction makes it faster and smoother to see the mistake if we are looking for proof with intent. Taking crazy bets without fear is fun.
I feel lucky that grofers has become a place that believes in these principles. It allows me to have fun working on interesting problems. It encourages me to try crazy ideas without fear of failure. I am eager to see how I will evolve in this journey of continuous hyper-growth.

Akshat leads the Product Team at Grofers. He works out of our HQs in Gurgaon, India. Reach out to him in case you want to work with his fun team.
