WeChat suspends new user registration for security compliance
July 27, 2021 9:32 pmWeChat is suspending all new user registrations until early August amid a widening crackdown on tech firms in China.
Details: In a brief post on social media, the Tencent-owned messaging app said the suspension relates to an upgrade of security technology "according to relevant laws and regulations."
"In the meantime, the registration of new WeChat personal accounts and public accounts will be temporarily suspended," the company said, adding that new registrations will resume after the upgrade is completed, which is expected in early August.
Earlier this month, China's Cyberspace Administration suspended the registration of new users of the online ride-hailing app Didi during a "cyber security review" period, on the grounds of preventing the expansion of risks.
Context: China has been cracking down on domestic technology giants over the last few months. The war against big techs mainly focuses on monopolistic practices, data security, financial stability, and listing shares on foreign exchanges, etc.
The State Administration for Market Regulation on Saturday ordered Tencent to give up its exclusive music licensing rights and slapped a fine on the company for anti-competitive behavior.
Several other tech companies, including e-commerce giant Alibaba (BABA), have faced investigations for alleged monopolistic behavior or breaches of customer rights, leading to record fines and massive overhauls.
