The future of Fitness workout experiences is around the corner. In an earlier post we outlined our vision for the next generation of AI coaches. Are you curious what such an AI coach would sound like and where it can really enhance a workout? If so, you came to the right place.

All of the following audio examples use sound design templates we created for health & fitness applications. They'll set the tone for your personalized, user-data generated audio messages and can be found right on api.audio.

1 - Using data to add value to a workout

The new generation of workout app and fitness hardware creates a plethora of information about you: your heart rate and potentially your weight and calorie intake are obvious examples. It might also be able to capture how long you have been awake and when you exercised last time. Maybe it can even derive your patterns or routines accordingly.

The workout device or app might also know about your speed and location, or whether you have just experienced a sudden drop in your exercise intensity. It can calculate how your current workout compares to your last workout - or compare it to that of other people at your age, gender and fitness levels. But how does that help you to look at a graph once a month? Couldn’t this data deliver valuable queues to improve your workout, while you are actually exercising? Here are some ideas how this could sound like:

Recommending performance based on heart rate:

“ …we still have 20 minutes to go. I would suggest dialing it back just a bit. Take a deep breath. And let’s pick it up again in 3, 2, 1.”

Comment on last distance performance:

React to time and personal routine:

“This is an unusual time of day for you to exercise. I recommend you take it a bit slower today. You might also want to increase your cool down period to at least 10 minutes.”

Voice: Shelly

2 - Being in the moment

Have you ever wondered why a live gym class is just so much more engaging than a recorded class? It is the same thing after all. This is for the same reason that radio stations do not repeat yesterday’s program, even though they might play the same songs: we just like to feel we are “in the moment” and up to date. An AI coach adds this dimension to any workout. Try one or more of these options:

Comment on time of day or location

3 - Making your workout more personal

How do you call a coach you hire to help you with your workout? Yes! It’s a ’personal’ trainer. Those coaches know all the tricks to make you workout harder while enjoying it more. Their main approach is to make your workout more … “personal” and the new generation of AI coach can help you with this as well.

Voice: Aria

4 - Working out together

Why do we go to fitness classes in the first place, rather than a workout at home? While some people appreciate the accountability, others feel more engaged by knowing others train alongside them. However, for most people it just makes for a better workout. An AI coach, can emulate these benefits.

Comment on the performance of the class:

5 - Gamifications and rewards

Finally, just think about how much more fun a workout can be if there is something to drive for: something to achieve or just some acknowledgment (some people go as far as to posting their workout stats on social media to just get a little bit of the latter) Here are a few ideas that come to mind.

A streak that keeps growing & applause/cheering:
