Envision AESC to create $1.4 billion UK electric battery plant for Nissan

Nissan and its partner pledges to build a $1.4 billion giant battery plant that can power 100,000 cars per year, Reuters reported on Thursday.

Details: Nissan will spend up to $582.18 billion to produce a new-generation all-electric crossover vehicle at the plant, where it already produces the LEAF electric vehicle and the Qashqai crossover SUV. The new vehicle has yet to be named and there is no launch date.

Chinese battery manufacturer Envision AESC will invest $620 million to build the battery plant, which will run on renewable energy and be able to power up to 100,000 Nissan electric vehicles per year.

The investment will create 6,200 jobs at the Sunderland plant and in British supply chains.

AESC (Automotive Energy Supply Corporation) was established as a joint venture between Nissan Motor Company, Ltd., NEC Corporation, and NEC Tokin Corporation to develop and produce high-performance lithium-ion batteries for car.

The company was acquired by Envision Group in 2019. The Chinese company and Nissan hold approximately 80% and 20% of the shares in the new entity Envision AESC, respectively.

Founded in 2007, Envision Group is a pioneer in energy internet of things (IoT) and owner of the intelligent IoT operating system EnOS, managing 100GW of energy assets globally.

Context: The Chinese battery supplier is increasing its bets on Europe, where electric vehicles are widely accepted. Last week, Envision AESC told press it will invest 2 billion euros ($2.37 billion) to build a battery factory in France. According to the company, the factory will offer an annual production capacity of 24 GWh by 2027 and 43 GWh by 2030 in several expansion stages.
