iPhone 13 Is Getting Huge Upgrades

Here are some details to hold you over until September!

It’s fair to say a lot of people have been waiting for a 120Hz iPhone display for years, and it’s finally happening.

According to a new report by supply chain outlet The Elec, the iPhone 13 Pro series is on track to getting 120Hz this year.

In case you don’t know, a 120Hz display displays 120 images per second, while a 60Hz display 60 images per second. The higher the number — the smoother everything on the screen will move.

The report says that both LG and Samsung (Apple’s display suppliers) are currently producing the new LTPO 120Hz displays on the new iPhones. This means that mass production has already begun a little earlier than scheduled. This could be due to the well-known chip shortage.

Because of the chip shortage, it only makes sense for Apple to prepare for the worst and just start mass production as soon as possible to get these iPhones out on time.

In case you didn’t know, the iPhone makes up 56% of Apple’s revenue so focusing on the production of these devices first is a no-brainer.

It’s certainly great news that we will likely not see any delays with the iPhone 13 series this year.

LTPO technology

An LTPO is a special kind of display technology that will allow the iPhone to variably refresh between 1Hz and 120Hz. The end result of this tinkering is an iPhone display that can always be on but not eat away at your battery life. The display will adapt to the content on the screen.

Since the Android competition has been offering this for years now, it’s nice that Apple is finally catching up to the competition.

Cameras

We have some new information from Digitimes saying the Sensor-shift OIS that we saw on the iPhone 12 Pro Max should be making its way to the rest of the iPhone 13 series. This is some DSLR-level camera tech that allows the camera to rapidly adjust its optical path in real-time to correct for a shaky hand or bumpy car during long exposures and video capture.

In traditional OIS, the lens barrel is shifted laterally to keep the image static on the image sensor. With this new tech, Apple has taken a different approach and instead shifts the image sensor itself resulting in more reactive and precise stabilization. In simpler terms, this more advanced tech will stabilize the actual sensor instead of the lens.

We should also see a new ultra-wide sensor with a wider aperture and autofocus which will be very appreciated as the difference in quality between the wide and ultra-wide shooter is significant. We can expect this new ultra-wide sensor to improve things massively.

Another worthy mention is the confirmation of the better main sensor and better telephoto lens coming to the smaller iPhone 13 Pro rather than just the Pro Max. This is different from last year's release where the 12 Pro Max had some superior camera features over the smaller 12 Pro. This is great for people who aren’t a fan of the bigger size but still want the best cameras Apple has to offer.

That’s it for the iPhone 13 series!
The launch is expected to be in September, with some rumors pointing to September 14th.
