萨尔瓦多有望成为第一个将比特币视为法币的主权国家。在美国迈阿密举行的 Bitcoin 2021 会议上，萨尔瓦多总统 Nayib Bukele 宣布该国与数字钱包公司 Strike 合作使用比特币技术去构建现代金融基础设施。他说，下周将向议会寄去法案将比特币视为法币。萨尔瓦多主要使用现金，70% 的居民没有银行账号或信用卡，来自国外工作的人的汇款占到了 GDP 的五分之一以上。国际转账收取的手续费可能高达 10% 以上。
