Shein becomes most downloaded shopping app in US

Shein, a fast-fashion e-commerce company, has moved past Amazon to become the most downloaded shopping app on iOS and Android in the US, according to data from App Annie.

Details: As of May 17, Shein was the top iOS shopping app in 54 countries and also number one in that category on Android devices across 13 countries.

The US is now Shein’s largest market, while it also ships to 220 countries, with websites for Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and the U.S.

The China-based company has attracted a young and growing fanbase with the constant deluge of trendy, inexpensive new clothes it releases online and through its app, as well as with its aggressive social-media marketing.

It advertises heavily on platforms such as Facebook, maintains a network of influencers who promote it on TikTok and Instagram, and regularly reposts photos from customers to keep them sharing its clothes online. 

Context: Shein controls its own production chain, from design and prototype to procurement to manufacturing. Each step is highly digitized and integrated with another, which allows the company to churn out hundreds of new products tailored to different regions and user tastes at a daily rate. 

Founded in October 2008 by Chris Xu, the company is now valued at about $15 billion.
