一个令我迷惑的单词 Virtual

我死活想不明白为什么这个词竟然可以有两种相反的意思，（1）虚的（2）实质的。
世界上哪有这种词呢？—— 集 “虚实” 于一身，二义兼而有之。以前就没想明白，今日再次遇见，又开始琢磨。
Existing or resulting in essence or effect though not in actual fact, form, or name:
实质上的，实际上的：虽然没有实际的事实、形式或名义，但在实际上或效果上存在或产生的：
e.g. the virtual extinction of the buffalo.
例：野牛实际上已经绝迹
Existing in the mind, especially as a product of the imagination. Used in literary criticism of text.
虚的，内心的：在头脑中存在的，尤指意想的产物。用于文学批评中
看到 “用于文学批评中” 稍微放心了一点，还好不是普遍应用的，要不然真的搞不清什么时候 “虚”、什么时候 “实” 了。不过我想可能就跟以前马哲中说 “必然是偶然的，偶然是必然的” 这种道理差不多的，这里的 “实” 是一种无名之实，“虚” 也是一种意象之实（说得我自己都迷糊了）。再加上这里的 “虚” 跟 “实” 大多数场合下不会冲突，也就是说我们一般遇到的意思还是 “实”。看起来也似乎无大碍了。
