China semiconductor imports slightly decline from all-time high

Beijing (PingWest)- Semiconductor imports by China in April decline slightly after it reached all time high in March, according to the statistic released by China’s customs.

China imported 54.7 billion semiconductor units in April, down 7% from the all-time high in March.

In March, China imported 58.9% semiconductors that worth USD35.9 billion.

Despite the slight decline, the imports in April were still 23% higher than the same period of last year.

In general, China is still imported more semiconductor unit than the previous year. As the end of April,30, China shipped 210 billion semiconductor units, worth USD126 billion in total. The number represents 30.8% year-on-year growth compared to the same period last year.

China increased its semiconductor imports as the world is struggling with a semiconductor shortage that has caused production issues in automobiles, smartphones, computers and even home appliance and personal computer sectors.

The global semiconductor shortage emerged in the spring of 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic spread worldwide. The manufacturers cannot fulfill the demand as the whole semiconductor industry downsized production.

Despite a global semiconductor shortage, global semiconductor revenue grew 10.8 percent to USD464 billion in 2020, and growth is expected to speed up this year and supply keep pace with demand, according to report released by IDC.

“Overall, the semiconductor industry remains on track to deliver another strong year of growth as the super cycle that began at the end of 2019 strengthens this year,” said Mario Morales, programme vice-president for semiconductors at IDC
