Vivo and Oppo Take Top Two Spots in China's Smartphone Market As Huawei Declined Amid U.S Sanctions
May 4, 2021 5:25 pmBeijing (PingWest)- Oppo and VIVO surpassed Huawei to become China’s largest and second-largest smartphone brands in the first quarter of 2021, as consumer business of the Shenzhen based telecom giant were significantly hit by U.S. sanctions.
As of the end of the first quarter, smartphone shipment of Vivo jumped 79% year-on-year to 21.6 million in the first quarter, giving it a market share of 23% in China’s smartphone sector, according to research firm Canalys.
Oppo, Vivo’s sister brand also owned by Guangzhou-based BBK Electronic, followed closely with a market share of 22%.
The rise of both Oppo Vivo come as the China’s smartphone shipment saw significant growth during the first quarter, up 27% year-on-year to 92.4 million units.
Vivo and Oppo is filling the gap left by Huawei, which dropped to the third place with a market share of 16%.
Huawei was the only smartphone brand that suffered a sales drop in top five brands.
Canalys also attributed Vivo and Oppo’s success to their outstanding performance in the affordable 5G segment.
The affordable 5G segment is just low-hanging fruit for Huawei’s competitors in China,” said Nicole Peng, vice president of mobility at Canalys.
Vivo and Oppo will launch their new flagship 5G smartphone to challenge the dominate of Huawei in high-end 5G smartphone sector.
Xiao and Apple ranked fourth and fith with market share of 15% and 13%, respectively, according to Canalys.
