New iOS privacy options will give iPhone users control of how much of their personal data advertisers like Facebook can continue to track.

The Lede

iOS 14.5 features a big privacy update called App Tracking Transparency, which requires iOS applications to first get users permission before collecting their personal data. Developers and advertisers must comply with these new rules, though Apple has yet to set a deadline for them to update their software.

Key Details

  • Facebook opposes the change, saying it will hurt small businesses. Facebook announced its opposition in a full-page New York Times ad.
  • Google has said it isn't planning to make any similar changes to its Android OS, which currently asks users just once for permission to give apps access to devices' location, camera and microphone.
  • A recent small business survey yielded inconclusive results when advertisers were asked what they thought of these changes. "Nobody really knows," they said.
