A new study suggests that Zoom fatigue is worse for women than men, thanks to the window that shows users their own image for the duration of the session.

The Lede

A Stanford University study found that more than 13.8% of women, compared to 5.5% of men, feel particularly exhausted after Zoom conferences. The reason? Zoom's user interface puts women at a disadvantage.

Key Details

  • The study had 10,000 respondents answer questions about Zoom, including "How concerned are you with your appearance?" and "How distracted are you by the mirror?" They also analyzed the pronouns respondents used: more "I"/"me" (than "we"/"us") indicated more self-focus.
  • The team found that the main reason for women's higher fatigue was the self-view mirror.
  • The data showed that women are more self-focused during Zooms due to the mirror, and prolonged self-focus can lead to depression and anxiety.
