Firefox was one of the few web browsers you could use on Amazon's Fire TV and Echo Show devices, and it's soon going away. Mozilla has announced that it'll no longer support Firefox for these Amazon devices, and it encourages you to use Silk instead.

Firefox's Existence on Amazon Fire TV and Echo Show

One of the ways users could access websites on their Fire TV and Echo Show was through Firefox. This browser even allowed people to watch YouTube videos when there was no official YouTube app available for Fire TV.

The browser seemed to do very well and we are not quite sure why it's being removed from these Amazon devices.

Mozilla Discontinues Firefox for Amazon Fire TV and Echo Show

On its support site, Mozilla has announced that it's going to end the support for Firefox on Amazon's Fire TV and Echo Show devices. Starting April 30, 2021, you'll no longer be able to install Firefox on these devices.

Mozilla's official announcement reads:

Starting on April 30, 2021, we will no longer support Firefox on Amazon Fire TV or Echo Show. You will no longer be able to install the app on FireTV, receive security updates, or be able to reinstall the app if you uninstall it starting on April 30, 2021. If you have Firefox set as your default browser on Echo Show, you will be redirected to Amazon Silk for web browsing starting April 30, 2021.

That means you should start looking for another browser if you want to continue accessing websites on your Amazon devices.

How to Install and Use a Firefox Alternative on Fire TV and Echo Show

Mozilla wasn't the only web browser that the aforementioned Amazon products had. Amazon has its own web browser named Silk available for these devices. You can use this browser when Firefox is gone and continue your browsing sessions.

On an Echo Show, you'll be automatically redirected to Silk when you attempt to open Firefox after the support ends.

  1. Select Find on Fire TV's main interface, and then choose Search.
  2. Type Silk and select Silk Browser in the search results.
  3. Select the internet icon, which is for Amazon's Silk browser.
  4. Select Download to download the browser to your Fire TV.
