做学术通常是一门家族生意。一项研究调查了美国 7000 多名 STEM、社会科学和人文科学领域拥有终身教职的学者家庭背景，发现他们更可能来自富裕家庭，他们的父母也更可能拥有博士学位，显示精英和学术家庭背景的人更可能进入学术界。这一结果并不出人意料，研究人员没有试图宣称学术界充斥着裙带关系，而是描述学术界的多元化问题，提出为什么经济状况和父母教育背景与学术成功相关的新问题，如何通过干预缩小这一差距。仅仅干预而不深入根源是没有真正解决问题的。研究报告发表在预印本网站 SocArXiv 上。
