New update available for version 2004 and 20H2
Microsoft’s February 2021 Patch Tuesday rollout also includes a cumulative update for Windows 10 version 2004 and 20H2 (the two share the same cumulative updates).
Windows 10 cumulative update KB4601319 is obviously focused on security improvements, and it includes patches that have previously been tested by Microsoft as part of the previous optional cumulative update.
As a result, KB4601319 resolves a possible elevation of privilege vulnerability in the win32k component, and this makes the cumulative update a must-have right now.
In addition, there’s a fix for a bug that could damage the file system on some devices and prevent them from starting up after running chkdsk /f, as Microsoft itself explains in the official changelog.
Focus on security improvements
And needless to say, since it’s a Patch Tuesday release, this cumulative update comes with several security fixes for Windows 10 and the built-in components.
“Security updates to the Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Apps, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Cloud Infrastructure, Windows Management, Windows Authentication, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Cryptography, Windows Virtualization, Windows Core Networking, and Windows Hybrid Cloud Networking,” one of the lines in the changelog reads.
Windows 10 version 20H2 is currently the newest feature update for Microsoft’s desktop operating system, though worth knowing its rollout is currently under way and not all devices have received it. Microsoft is using a gradual rollout, just like for the previous feature updates, in an attempt to prevent bugs from hitting a bigger number of devices – this approach allows the company to suspend the release for certain computers when it detects a glitch affecting specific configurations.
The new updates seem to install correctly on all devices out there, as there are no reports of failed installs so far. So in theory, you should be able to install the new updates just fine on your device too, though we’ll continue to monitor all reports and let you know if any problems arise.
