In 2011, Los Andes Type emerged as a secondary studio venture and “spin-off” of LatinoType, Chile’s first digital type foundry established in 2007. The goal was to create a collection of type designs that weave a visual story of sorts, inspired by the studio’s native South America.

The type designs crafted by Los Andes Type draw upon the unique experiences of each designer, resulting in type families that are expressive, original, and highly versatile in any designer’s workflow.

Every character set carries a distinctive personality – one that reflects the individuality of the typographer who brought it to life.

One of their more recent releases through YouWorkForThem is Spock, “a logically structured typeface with unpredictable alternates” designed by Luciano Vergara, César Araya, and Rodrigo Fuenzalida.

You don’t have to be a Star Trek fan to appreciate Spock’s design – although Trekkies will certainly enjoy this family’s subtle homage to the beloved sci-fi classic. Like its namesake character, “Spock has a neutral and clean structure,” but as you begin to explore its OpenType features, a rich variety of alternates emerges — even glyphs with pointed ears.

Spock offers extensive versatility that meets the needs of graphic designers in every way possible, the least of which includes four sub-families in six weights each. Spock is available in Pro, which offers 609 characters and a generous number of alternates. It is also offered in three Essential sets that are composed of alternate glyphs for incredible design flexibility.

Each sub-family is offered in Thin, UltraLight, Light, Regular, Bold, and Black weights, with corresponding italics for each. The range of styles and weights within this superfamily of sans serifs makes it beautifully suited to everything from displays and signage to advertising, logo design, product packaging, marketing materials, website designs, and mobile applications. It is an ideal choice for branding and identity projects that require fluid design cohesion across multiple media applications.

Spock offers fantastic versatility through OpenType, including case-sensitive forms, fractions, standard ligatures, and stylistic alternates. The Pro family extends multilingual support to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Catalan, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, Pan African Latin, Dutch, and Afrikaans for design projects intended for an international audience. The Essential variants of Spock extend multilingual support to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, and Pan African Latin so if your design calls for language support that goes beyond that realm, you’ll want to go with Spock Pro.

Los Andes Type currently offers 36 products through YouWorkForThem — a variety of sans serifs, serifs, script, and display type families to suit design projects of all kinds.
